This invention relates to portable receptacles and has particular reference to ladies handbags.

One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described having a foundation bag and cover having improved detachable coordination and/or reversible cooperation with each other, so that the handbag shall be neat in appearance, with any fastening means that may be used being relatively concealed or inconspicuous.

Another object of the invention is to furnish an improved removable cover for a handbag which shall be removable, and preferably reversible, and desirably washable.

A further object of the invention is the pro vision of a device of the class alluded to having relatively few and simple parts and which is inexpensive to manufacture, and durable, reliable, convenient and efficient in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.

With the aforesaidobjects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawing, wherein like partsare designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a portable receptacle such as a handbag embodying the invention. The same includes a foundation bag 11 and a removable cover '12 therefor. The latter is provided with a pocket 13 which may be defined by opposite elongated side walls 14and end'walls 15, suitably interconnected, as along seam lines 16. Disposed at or above the opening 17 of the pocket, the cover may have suitable connecting means. For example, the side walls 14 may have upward projecting flaps 18 that may be arranged to'lie in the planes of the walls. These flaps may carry detachable fastening ,means, such as the eyelets 19, disposed in relative proximity to the free edges 20 of the flaps. Desirably, the flaps 18 may each be foldable in a suitable relation, for instance, inward of each other, as along longitudinal fold or hinge lines 21. In this manner, the flaps are in a sense each divided into sections 22 and 23, on opposite sides of the fold lines, although one of these sections, particularly 23 may be readily omitted.

The cover 12 may be reversible as well as removable, and hence may be suitably finished on the inside and outside, with the different faces having different colors or designs or provided by different fabrics such as 14a, 14b, uniformly throughout. By means of the eyelets 19, the cover may be attached in a similar uniform manner in either position. To afford a relatively taut engagement, the sections 22, 23 may be stiffened, as by being treated with a liquidhardening material that has little .or no solubility in water, while the rest of the cover may be stiff or pliable throughout, as preferred.

The foundation bag 11 may be received in the pocket 13 of the cover and may have a pocket 25 the opening 26 of which may be in register with the opening 17 of the cover. The bag 11 is provided with flaps or extensions such as 2'7 which are external of the pocket and are covered over by the flaps 18 that are detachably connected therewith. Broadly, the coordination is such that one of the cover and bag elements is provided with a flap overlying the edge of the other element, the latter being detachably connected to the companion element, for instance, to the flap thereof. More specifically, the flap of the cover overlies the flap or extension 27 and may extend therealong toward or into the pocket of the bag to a desired degree, the bag being provided with or without a fastener for its pocket as may be preferred, and located below or above the fastening between the bag and the cover. Within the broad principles of the invention, a specific coordination will now be described.

The bag 11 may have an outer wall 28 and a lining 29, the former extending above the pocket opening 26 and wholly along the sides of the latter, so as to enclose longitudinal stiffener strips 30 around which it is infolded. A slide fastener 31 may be employed to close the opening 26, the slide fastener having longitudinal fabric strips 32 inserted between the lining 29 and the adjacent portion 33 of the outer wall fabric, with stitching 34 interconnecting these parts as shown. Arranged for alinement with the eyelets 19, are the snap fastener studs 35 which are secured to the flaps or extensions 2'7 with the shanks passing through the outer wall 28, the stiffeners 30, and the inner wall portions 33. With the heads of these studs, the eyelets are detachably reversably engaged.

It will be perceived that the cover and foundation bag may be generally similar in contour, each having extensions or flaps above its pocket openings, and being separate of each other at the ends of the handbag, and at least within a limited degree, movable toward and away from each other. The stiff extensions 2'7 hold the cover flaps 18 longitudinally taut by reason of the snap fastener engagement. When the device is assembled. the slide fastener and the snap fasteners are covered by the flap elements so as to be inconspicuous or are so housed therebetween as to be unnoticeable. Access to the slide fastener is readily obtained by pressing the flap elements apart as shown in Fig. 8.

As a convenient way for carrying the handbag, the slide fastener may have a flexible element or chain 36 connected to the slide 37, and a hand loop may be engaged with the chain. The loop may likewise consist of two strips of fabric 39, 40, so as to be reversible and present either fabric on the outside to conform with the external face of the cover.

In use, it is merely necessary to insert the foundation bag 11 into the cover, and then to fold the flaps 18 over the extensions 27, and to secure the snap fasteners. Now the handbag is complete and may be opened, closed and carried about in a conventional manner. Upon opening the snap fasteners, the foundation bag may be pulled out of the cover, and the latter washed or reversed as desired, and reapplied to the foundation bag as above set forth.

It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made in the device as shown in the drawing, and that the same is submitted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the following claims. I claim:

1. A removable cover for a handbag, comprising a pocket adapted to receive the handbag, said pocket having side walls and end walls interconnecting the same, the side walls having upward extending flaps separate from the end walls, said flaps having marginal portions foldable inward over the edges of the handbag at the opening thereof, and said marginal portions having means for detachable connection with the handbag.

2. A removable cover for a handbag having a pocket adapted to receive the handbag, said pocket having side walls provided with upward extending flaps extending continuously along said side walls and adapted for infolding over the handbag edges at the opening thereof, said flaps having means at the edges thereof for individual releasable engagement with the handbag adjacent to said edges of the latter.

A handbag comprising a foundation bag and a cover therefor, said bag including side walls forming a pocket therebetween, said cover having a pocket for receiving said bag and having side flaps folded over the edges of the side walls of the bag and individually releasably connected to the said side walls of the bag at the inner sides thereof adjacent to the opening of said bag.

4. A handbag comprising a foundation bag and a cover therefor, said bag having side wall portions movable toward and away from each other in opening and closing the bag and being disposed in relative proximity to each other in the closed position of the bag, the cover having a pocket for receiving the bag and having side flaps projecting above the pocket and folded inward over the edges of the side wall portions for releasable engagement with the bag between said wall portions.

5. A handbag comprising a foundation bag and a cover therefor, the foundation bag having side wall portions movable toward and away from each other, the cover having side wall extensions folded over the said wall portions, and means individually releasably connecting said extensions to the wall portions between the latter.

6. A handbag comprising a foundation bag and a cover therefor, said bag having side walls and means for releasably interconnecting the same at the opening of the pocket of the bag, the cover having a pocket in which the bag is received, and individual means releasably interengaging the side walls of the bag with the corresponding sides of the cover, said individual means being disposed between the side walls and being located above the interconnecting means.

7. A handbag comprising a foundation bag and a cover therefor, the bag having side walls and a slide fastener interconnecting the same to control the pocket of the bag, the side walls having longitudinally extending marginal portions spaced from but in relative proximity to each other and projecting above the slide fastener, said marginal portions being movable toward and away from each other on opening and closing the bag and being separate of each other, the cover having a pocket to receive the bag and its side walls provided respectively with separate longitudinal flaps extending upward and folded inward individually over the corresponding marginal portions, and snap fastener means between the marginal portions for individually connecting the latter with the flaps, said snap fasteners being located externally of the bag and above the slide fastener.

8. A removable cover for a handbag, comprising a pocket adapted to receive the handbag, said pocket having side walls and end walls interconnecting the same, the side walls having upward extending flaps separate from the end walls, said flaps having marginal portions foldable inward over the edges of the handbag at the opening thereof, and having eyelets for reversable detachable connection with snap fastener studs of the handbag.

9. A removable cover for a handbag having a pocket adapted to receive the handbag, said pocket having side walls provided with upward extending flaps extending continuously along said side walls and adapted for infolding over the handbag edges at the opening thereof, said flaps having means at the edges thereof for individual releasable engagement with the handbag adjacent to said edges of the latter, and stiffening portions associated with the flaps without interfer'ing with the foldable character thereof.
