L. GRINNEL'L. Sewing Machine Attachments.
'No. 236,478. Patented July 27, 1880.
NJEYLRS, PNOTO-LITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRA L. GRINNELL, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,478, dated July 27, 1880.
Application filed J annary 10, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA L. GRINNELL, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of a supplementary foot for sewing-machines by means of which hemmers, tuckers, and other attachments may be secured in place and operated with exactness.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my device carrying a hemmer and detachably attached to the presser-foot of a sewing-machine. Fig.2 is a perspective of the device detached and without the hemmer.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the body of my supplementary foot, made to conform in its curvature to the curvature of the bottom of the presser-foot B and of the same width. It is provided upon one side with one or more flanges, a, and upon the opposite side with a wing-guide, b, and with a needle-hole, c, which should be coincident with the slot ,in the presserfoot through which the needle passes.
The body A is bent over upon itself, as at d, to hook upon the front edge of the presserfoot, and is curved, as shown at e, at the opposite end to rest against the heel of the presser-i'oot, where it is secured in place by the wire loop 0, one end of which passes through the presser-bar D and is secured by the setscrew h.
The wing-guide is provided with a slot, i, 40 through which a thumb-screw, 70, passes to secure the hemmer E or other device, into which a hole is tapped for the purpose.
What I claim as my invention is- 4 1. In combination with the presser-foot of a 5 sewing-machine, a supplementary foot formed of a plate having two parallel upturned sides, one end bent at the toe to embrace the toe of the presser-foot and the other end turned up behind the heel of the presser-foot to prevent said supplementary foot from slipping off in any direction when the presser -foot is down, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the presser-foot of a sewing machine and the device carrying 5 said foot, said device being provided with a hole, of a supplementary foot having one of its ends turned up behind the heel of the presserfoot, a wire loop for holding said supplementary foot in place, and a set-screw for secur- 6o ing said loop, substantially as shown and described.
3. A supplementary foot adapted to be attached to the presser-foot of a sewing-machine, havingthe wing or guide b,provided with the slot i, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
' IRA L. GRINNELL.
