SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL J. Boynnn, a citizen of Canada, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to sewing machine attachments, and more particularly to sewing machine hennners, and has for its object to provide means whereby hemmers or other similar attachments, such as a binder, a braider or corder, or an edge guide, may be mounted on the presser foot in such a manner as to be conveniently removed, when desired, as also in such a manner that it may be adjusted laterally on the presser foot with reference to the position of the needle or direction of movement of the work. To this end the hemmer or other attachment is provided with a shank having a vertical flange or upturned portion constructed with a double key-hole slot, and in the lower part of the shank of the presser-foot are mounted two headed studs adapted to pass through the larger portions of this key-hole slot, the narrower portions of said slot closely fitting the shanks of the said studs beneath the said heads, when the attachment is mounted on the presser foot. The studs referred to pass loosely through the shank of the presser-foot but with a close fit, and are connected to a spring which is attached to the rear side of the presser-foot by said studs, said spring acting to hold one or both of said studs frictionally against the upturned flange of the attachment so that the attachment will be frictionally retained in place in such a manner that it may be adjusted laterally simply by sliding it slightly one way or the other, and may be readily removed, when desired, by moving the shank to a position which will cause the larger portions of the double keyhole slot to register with the heads of said studs.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in the form of a hemmer attachment. Figs. 2, 3 and at are plan, side and rear views, respectively, of the same, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 55, Fig. 3.

13 by which said foot may be detachably secured to a sewing machine presser-bar in a well-known manner. Mounted on the said presser-foot, in the form of the invention herein illustrated, is a scroll hemmer 1 1 of well-known construction, said hemmer 14 being provided with a shank 15 having an upturned portion or vertical flange 16 constructed with a double key-hole slot 17. Mounted in the lower part of the shank of the presser-foot are two studs 18 and 19 the heads of which are adapted to pass through the enlarged portions of the double key-hole slot, so that when said enlarged portions are brought into register with said studs the atta chment may be applied to the presser-foot, and may then be removed laterally to bring the heads of the said studs into register with the narrower portions of the key-hole slot, so that the attachment will be secured in place on the presser-foot.
The studs 18 and 19 are riveted to a spring 20 mounted at the rear side of the presser foot and held in place by said studs, said spring serving to draw the head of the stud 18 into frictional engagement with the flange 16 of the hemmer shank 15 and thus frictionally hold the hemmer attachment in place, but permitting it to he slid laterally on said studs for the purpose of adjustment, or for the purpose of bringing the enlarged portions of the key-hole slot into register with said studs when the attachment is to be removed. The head of the stud 19 fits closely against the front side of the flange 1G and said head is preferably provided with a slot or nick 21 and a portion of the shank of the presser-foo-t adjacent said stud is preferably PlOVlClQCl with a notch 22. The said stud 19 passes through a washer 23 which is held against the spring 20 by the riveted portion of the said stud, the latter being thus so mounted that it may be turned, if desired.
If it he desired to adjust the hemmer or other attachment laterally on the presserfoot in a more convenient or exact manner than can be done by sliding the same laterally by hand, a screw-driver or similar pointed instrument may be inserted into the slot or nick in the stud 19, with one edge of the screw driver in the said notch 22 in the shank portion of the attachment, so that by turning the screw driver slightly an eccentric adjustment will be afi'orded by which the attachment may be slid or adjusted laterally in an exact or delicate manner, such adjustment being for the purpose of locating the line of stitching at any desired distance from the edge of the hem; and the said attachment will be maintained in any position to which it may be adjusted by reason of the frictional hold of the heads of the studs 18 and 19 on the flange portion 16 of the presser-foot shank.
It will be understood that the construction above described affords a convenient means whereby a hemmer may be readily mounted on a presser foot in such a manner as to be conveniently and quickly removed if it be desired to replace the same by a hemmer of a different width; and it will also be understood that the hemmer shown in the drawing may be replaced by another attachment of any suitable kind such as a binder, a braider or corder, etc.
The construction above described provides convenient means whereby a hemmer or other attachment may be readily and quickly applied to or removed from its supporting presser-foot or may be adjusted laterally thereon, without requiring the tightening or loosening of a set-screw or similar device the attachment being retained in any desired position of adjustment on the presser-foot by means of the frictional hold of the heads of the studs against the upturned flange on the shank portion of the attachment.
Havino thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. The combination with a sewing ma chine presser-foot having a shank portion provided with two headed studs one of which is loosely mounted for endwise movement in said shank portion, of an attachment, such as a hemmer or the like, having a shank provided with an upturned portion or flange constructed with a double key-hole slot receiving the said studs, the heads of said studs being adapted to frictionally engage the said upturned portion or flange :9 for the purpose of adjustably and removably securing the attachment to the said presser foot, and a spring acting on said loosely mounted stud and serving to hold the head thereof in frictional contact with the shank of the attachment.
2. The combination with a sewing machine presser-foot having a shank portion provided with two headed-studs, of an attachment, such as a hemmer or the like, having a shank provided with an upturned portion or flange constructed with a double keyhole slot receiving the said studs, the heads of said studs being adapted to frictionally engage the said upturned portion or flange for the purpose of adjustably and removably securing the attachment to the said presser foot, and a spring attached to the shank portion of said presser-foot and to which spring the said studs are attached by means of riveted or upset portions of said studs.
3. The combination with a sewing machine presser-foot having a shank portion provided with two headed-studs, of an attachment, such as a hemmer or the like, having a shank provided with an upturned portion or flange constructed with a double key-hole slot receiving the said studs, the heads of said studs being adapted to frictionally engage the said upturned portion or flange for the purpose of adjustably and removably securing the attachment to the said presser foot, one of said studs being provided with a slit or nick and said shank being provided with a notch adjacent to the said stud, to enable the attachment to be adjusted laterally by means of a screwdriver or the like.
