. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL CORN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,145, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed February 11,188 1. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL CORN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Gap; andIdohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making part' of this specification.
Thisinventionis in the natureof animprovement in caps.
The invention consists in a cap constructed with the rear portion of the cover thereof extending below the lower edge of the cap-body to form a cape or ear and neck protector, and the cover at its rear being stitched above the lower edge of the body of the cap and diminishing in size at its front into two bands, the ends of which are united and secured to the cap in any suitable manner.
In the accompanying sheet of drawin gs, Figure 1 represents a side view of my cap with the protector or rear prolongation of the capcover pulleddown to cover the ears and neck; Fig. 2, a rear view of the cap, partly in section, with the protector raised and encircling the capbody.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the two figures.
This invention relates more particularly to caps for winter wear and provided with a cape to protect the ears and neck of the wearer, of which there are many varieties; but the cap constructed as hereinafter described is believed to possess advantages not found in any similar cap.
To construct my cap the bodyAthereof may be of any desired form and size, and made from any suitable material, and it may be covered with cloth, velvet, fur, or otherwise, in the ordinary manner. The rear portion of this cover A, however-that is, that portion of it which is in the rear of the visor B-instead of ending, as in other caps, at the bottom, a, of the body, is continued in one piece below this lower edge of the body to a length sufficiently deep to make a cape or protector, O. This cover, as before stated, not only depends below the lower edge of the cap-body, but it is also stitched to the cap-body, or the rear part thereof, as at b, somewhat above the rear lower edge of the same. The cape O, in this way formed by the continuation of the cover A of the cap, has its front portionthat is, that part which is above the visor--diminished in size to form two ornamental bands, D and E, which encircle the front portion of the cap immediately above the visor B, in which position. they are secured to the body of the cap centrally above the visor, and their ends united by buttons or loops, or in any desired manner. That portion of the body of the cap 0 which is below the place 11, where the rear part of the cover is stitched to the body of the cap, is covered by one or more pieces of cloth, F and G, of the same material as is the cover.
My cap, constructed substantially as hereinbefore described, is operated, when on the head of the wearer, and when it is desired to protect the ears and neck, by simply drawing downward the rear prolongation of the cover or cape 0, when such part will depend below the edge of the cap-body and snugly fit around the ears and neck of the wearer, protecting them from cold and inclement weather. -(See Fig. 1.) When not in use this cape or protector is readily folded up by a single fold until it surrounds the rear portion of the capbody and presents the appearance of an ordinary band-cap. (See Fig. 2.) upward of the cape is materially facilitated by uniting the cape portion 0 of the cover to the cap-body, above the lower edge thereof, as at b. By so doing the cape is rendered more readily adjustable, and the wearer is enabled to restore it around the body of the cap in one fold and by a single operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cap constructed with its cover extending in one continuous .piece below the lower edge of the body of the cap, to form a cape orprotector, and stitched to the rear part of the capbody above its lower edge, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a cap with its cover extending continuously below the lower edge of the body of the cap, to form a cape or protector, the front This folding at which the rear part of the cover is stitched to to the body covered. with one or more separate pieces of cloth, substantially as and for the purpose described.
