BONNET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
Application filed July 14, 1910. Serial No. 571,876.
lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. VOELKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of WVest Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bonnets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to womens bonnets and my object is to provide a simple and economical construction of attractive appearance adapted to entirely inclose the hair of the wearer.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and is specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved bonnet as it appears when in use. Fig. 2 shows the flat piece of pliable material from which the soft crown and pufied rear body of the bonnet is formed, the dotted lines indicating the location of gathering stitches by which the edge portions of the material are crimped as required.
A represents a front band of the hat which is formed of relatively stilf material with parallel rear and front edges and curved intermediately to rest upon the front portion of the head, and having similar side portions an, adapted to depend in front of the ears of the wearer.
The soft crown and puffed rear body B of the bonnet, is formed of a single piece with a curved front-edge portion 6 which is attached to the rear edge of the vertically arranged band A from end to end of the latter; and also a bottom-edge portion 0 connecting the ends of the front band A and forming a curved neck band extending rearward and downward from the ends of said band A below the ears of the wearer, and adapted to contact with the back of the wearers neck below the hair line; the effect being to loosely cover the entire head between the closely fitting vertical front band A and the connecting neck band formed by the bottom edge portion 0 of the soft body.
The soft body B described, is formed from a single flat piece of pliable fabric, which is cut to approximately the shape of the segment of a circle as indicated in Fig. 2, and to a size suflicient to provide the desired crown and puff body when shaped. The forming of this segmental piece is effected by crimping the arc-edge portion 5 thereof by means of a line of stitching b, so as to gather said edgeto correspond with the length of the front band A to which it is sewed; and by similarly crimping the bottom or chord-edge portion 0, preferably by means of a double line of stitching 0, securing an elastic strip and forming a rearneck band adapted to hug the neck when the bonnet is in place.
In order to improve the appearance of the finished bonnet, the line of stitching b for the front band connection of the body B, is preferably located a sufficient distance from the margin of the latter to form a loose-edge ornamental ruffle or frill 6 upon the band A as indicated; and a similar rufile connecting with the other, is preferably formed upon the rear-neck band 0 by providing the segmental body B with a corresponding rectangular extension 0 beyond the chord line stitching 0 as shown. Thus a more ornamental appearance is readily imparted to the very simple and inexpensive construction described, the ruflies of both the vertical and the approximately horizontal bands which outline the protecting inclosure for the hair, being parts of the single piece of body B forming the soft crown and puffed body.
What I claim is 1. A bonnet comprising a stiff vertical front band with parallel rear and front edges and having spaced ends adapted to depend in front of the wearers ears, and a soft crown and puffed rear body formed of a single piece of flat fabric shaped to the segment of a circle, said segmental piece having its arc-edge portion crimped and attached to said front band and its chord-edge portion crimped to form a rear-neck band connecting the ends of said front band, substantially as set forth.
2. A bonnet comprising a stiff vertical front band with parallel rear and front edges and having spaced ends adapted to depend in front of the wearers ears, and a mental piece having its arc-edge portion soft crown and puffed rear body formed of ends of said front band, substantially as set a single piece of fiat fabric shaped to the forth. 10 segment of a circle having a rectangular In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaextension beyond the chord line, said segture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHAS. T. VOELKER. crimped and attached to the front band and l/Vitnesses: its chord-edge portion crimped to form a D. M. STEWART, loose edged rear-neck band connecting the W. G. STEWART.
