This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to floor brushes such as commonly constructed of adjacent tufts of bristles.

It is commonly known that, after a comparatively short period of use, the bristles of such brushes become bent and matted together and thereby render the brush useless long before the bristles are worn out.

An object of my invention is to provide a sep- 19 arator, for brushes of this class, whereby the tufts of bristles are kept apart and preventedfrom matting together.

Another object is to provide reinforcing means to give the bristles added strength in sweeping i5 and also hold them in proper position to keep them straight.

A still further object of my invention is to provide such means which can be readily attached to the brush or removed therefrom at will and which can be supplied at a minimum cost.

Other objects will be clearly understood from the following specification and from the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view, in elevation, of a brush comprising my invention.

Figure 2 is a side view in central vertical section, on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is an end view in central vertical section, on line 33 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a similar view showing a modified form of my invention.

As illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 5 denotes the head of the brush which consists of a channelled bar, preferably formed of sheet metal and bent into parallelism thus forming a double bar head in which the bristles 6 are gripped around a core 1.

Such brushes are usually provided with a holder 8 to which a handle, not shown, is at' tached. The said holder is secured to the brush head by means of a clamp consisting of an upper plate 9 and a lower plate Ill which are secured together and clamped to both bars of the brush head by means of a bolt II and a nut l2. The holder 8 is attached to the said clamp by such means as a wing nut [3 which is threaded to the upper end of the bolt II.

My invention consists in providing, for brushes of this class, a tuft separating bar M which is secured to the head of the brush by being mounted in the loops l5 at the ends of extensions I6 projecting downwardly from the clamping member Ill. The said bar I4 is preferably bent to form a double bar conforming with the shape of the head of the brush and is made of a spring wire material so that it will retain the bristles of the brush in their proper position while at the same time it will be yieldable so as to move with said bristles during sweeping.

In the modification illustrated in Figure 4 of 5 the drawing, the clamping member may consist of an upper plate I! and a lower plate l8 and the bar I4 may be mounted in a yieldable steel clip l9 which is secured to the clamp by means of the bolt ll extending through an opening in 10 the top of said clip and thus mounting the same against the bottom surface of the lower clamping plate l8.

It will be readily understood from the above description that the said supporting bar [5 will retain the tufts of the bristles at each side of the brush in supported position and reinforce them and that, during a sweeping operation, the said bar, being constructed of a spring wire, will yield with the motion of the bristles and return to its normal position without becoming deformed through displacement.

When the modified form of the supporting member for the bar, such as shown at I9 in Figure 4, is used, the said supporting member, 5 being also yieldable, will permit the entire separator bar l4 to move with the bristles of the brush and will return the said bar to its normal position.

What I claim is:

1. In combination with a brush of the character described comprising a head, bristles mounted in said head, and separate clamping means including an upper and a lower clamping plate connected to said head; a separate bar secured to said lower plate in position between said bristles.

2. A brush of the character described comprising a head consisting of parallel bars, bristles extending from each of said bars, a clamping member comprising an upper clamping plate, a lower clamping plate, a bolt extending through said plates for securing the same upon the bars of said head, an extension upon the said lower clamping plate and a separator bar mounted to said extension and positioned thereby between said bristles.

3. In combination with a brush of the character described comprising a head, bristles mounted in said head and a handle holder secured to said head by means of a separate clamp comprising an upper and a lower clamping plate;

a separator bar secured to said lower clamping plate and positioned between said bristles.

acter described having a head comprising parallel bars, bristles extending from said bars and a clamp consisting of an upper and a lower clamping plate secured to and extending between said parallel bars; a separating member comprising parallel bars positioned between said bristles and means for mounting said separating member to said lower clamping plate.

5. For a brush of the character described comprising a head having bristles extending therefrom and separate clamping means secured to said head; a member including a bar of spring wire for separating said bristles and a yieldable supporting member of sheet metal adapted to be secured to said clamping means for supporting said bar.

6. For a brush of the character described comprising a head having bristles extending therefrom, separate clamping members and fastening means for securing said clamping members to said head; means for separating said bristles and a yieldable supporting member secured to said brush by said fastening means for supporting said separating means between said bristles.

7. For a brush of the character described having a head comprising parallel bars, bristles extending from said bars and clamping members secured to and extending between said bars; means for separating said bristles at a distance from said head and means adapted to be se- Icured to said clamping members for supporting said separating means.
