Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL E. BAKER, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,376, dated October 13, 1857.
To all fro/tom may concern.'
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL E. BAKER, of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Device to be Applied to iindow-Sashes for the purpose of Retaining Them at Any Desired Point or Height; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,`making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1, is a side or face view of a sash iitted in its frame and having my improvement applied to it. Fig. 2, is an end view of the window frame. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of the sash frame and my improvement taken in the line Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of window sash holders in which friction is employed as a means for retaining the sash.
The object of the invention is to obviate the difficulties hitherto attending such devices, viZ: the abrasion of either the sash or window frame by undue friction and the slipping down of the sash owing to an insutiiciency thereof caused by wear or otherwise.
The invention consists in having a clamp attached to one side of the sash, which clamp is made to sustain or hold the sash by grasping a cord which is placed within one of the jamb posts or stiles of the window frame as hereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a window frame and B represents a vertical sliding sash fitted therein.
These parts are of usual construction and therefore do not require a minute description. To one side of the sash B there is attached a metal plate C. This plate projects outward from the sash a suitable distance and its outer edge is curved, as shown at (a). A similar plate D, is placed against the plate C and is secured thereto-by an india rubber band (b) which passes through openings (c) in said plates. The outer end of the plate D is rounded as shown at (d) and the inner end has a shank (f) attached, said shank being lit-ted in or passing through a recess or mortise (e) in one of the Stiles of the sash, said shank being of suitable length so that it may be readily acted upon by the thumb or finger.
E represents vertical cord which is fitted in a recess (f1) cut in the jamb post shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. This cord is not drawn or stretched taut in the recess but is allowed to be somewhat slack. This cord is grasped by the plates C, D7 which consequently retain or hold up the sash at anydesired point. The sash being allowed to move freely at any time by pressing upon the shank which will throw out the rounded or curved end of the plate D from the cord E. It is not absolutely necessary that the shank be attached to the plate D for the sash may be moved by applying the hand to the sash without throwing the plate D out from the cord, but it is preferable to relieve the cord from the pressure of the plates when the sash is moved as it prevents the wearing of the cord. y
By having the cord E fitted rather slack in the recess its bers will not be distended and it will consequently be more pliant so that the plates will be .less liable to slip upon it than otherwise and the cord will also be subjected to less wear. It will be seen that by this improvement neither the sash nor the window framing are injured by friction as is the case with most of the friction devices employed for the purpose nor are the sustaining parts liable to become worn so as to be rendered useless. I do not confine myself to any precise form of spring to be applied to the plates C, D, nor to any precise material for the cord E.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The clamp formed of the plates C, D, attached to the sash B, in combination with the cord E arranged substantially as andv 'for the purpose set forth.
NATHANIEL E. BAKER. Witnesses:
