manner shown. Said holder consists of a single piece. of wire 3 of metal or any other suitable material, which is bent or configurated to form a flattened eye .L'to which the cord 1 is directly tied, and from said eye diverge a pair of legs 5 in the manner shown. The ends 6 of the legs 5 are curved toward each other,v as illustrated. Between the eye 4 and the legs 5 is formed a double stem portion 7 part of which together with said eye are bent obliquely to the plane in which the legs 5 lie, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the stem is .provided with registering curved portions 8 which form a ring 9. Against the ring portion 9 is located the head 10 of a paper cutter 11, and a rivet 12 passes through said ring and a hole 13 formed in the cutter-head 10,whereby the wire 3 and the cutter are setions wherein some or all of the leaves are cured to each other. In assembling the parts the rivet 12, which initially is formed as shown in Figs. 5, 6, is flared out to form the head 14 which bears against the underside of the cutter 11, the upper or round-hcad 15 0f the rivet,which head is springy, overlaps the ring 9 and bears under tension against the opposite side of the cutter, while cut-out portlons 16 in the rivet permit the stern portions 7 projecting from opposite sides of the ring 9 to pass out from the head 15 and prevent rotation of the rivet relatively to the stem 7, in which manner the cutter 11 is enabled to swivel under tension. about the rivet 12 as a pivot, from an operative or. cutting position shown in Fig. 1 to an inoperative or folded position shown in Figs. 3,4. The

cutter 11 may bemade of any suitable metal or any other substance suitable for the purpose.

When utilizing this book mark the holder 2 thereof is inserted between the back-binding 17 and the leaves 18 .of the book 19, in

the manner illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and the cords 1 maybe then utilized for book marking purposes in the usual manner. While the wire 3 and cutter 11 are here shown as of substantial thickness forconvenienceof material, whereby when the book is utilized or in closed state the holder 2 will in no way interfere withthe binding, and will in'no way injure or mar any portion of the book or the furniture upon which it may be placed. The inclination of the eye 4 maintains it be low the edge of the book cover 21, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby preventing any contact of the eye portion with anything outside ofthe limits ofthe book covers. As the legs'5 tend to spring outwardly the holder 2 is thereby firmly maintained in its place within the binding, and the curvature of its terminals 6 prevents any undue abrasion thereof against the binding. The configuration of the legs 5 and their terminals 6 are also conducive to permitting the holder 2 .to' tilt to any position, as shown in Fig. 8, whereby the eye 4 is permitted to assume any position along the leaves of the book to conform with any position of the cordl within the leaves.

. or any other desired'information- Normally thisdevice is utilized forthe above described usual book-marking functions, in the position and'manner illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, but I in case the book user finds that some of the leaves of'the book-are uncut, as occurs frequently and often unexpectedly, he withdraws the bookmark and holder 2 from the book 19, and turning the cutter 11 about its pivot 12 disposes it to the position shown in Fig. 1 or its operative condition. He may then grasp the holder 2 in the manner of a handle and proceed to cut up the pages or leaves with the cutter 11 conveniently and efficiently, after which he may fold back the cutter to a position between the legs 5 of the holder 2 and reinsert the entire device between the back-binding and leaves of the book, as indicated in Figs. 3', 4..

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim o g 1. A book mark device having the combination of a marker cord, means for attach ing said cord to said device, means for retaining the device between the back binding and-leaves of a book, and a leaf cutting element, said element being pivoted relatively to said retaining means whereby it may be disposed side by side with said retaining means or opposite thereto.

A book mark device having the" combination of a marker" cord, means'for attaching said cord to said device, means for retaining the devlce "adapted to be inserted between .the back binding and leaves of a book, and a leaf cutting element, said elementbeingpivoted relatively to i said retaining means whereby it maybe-disposed side by side with said retaining'means or opposite thereto, said element embodying meansto limit'the insertion movement of said retaining means.

A book mark device havlng the combination of a marker cord, means for'attaching said cord to said d'evice,=1neans for retaining the device adapted to be inserted between the back binding and leaves of abook, a leaf cutting element, said element being pivoted relatively to saidretaining means whereby 1t may be disposed side by side with said retainingmeansor opposite thereto,and

means to limit the insertion movement of said element;
