Description

Patented Feb. 3, 1931 UTED STATES @Partnr i ortica JOHN o. BAUMGARTEN, oF PORTLAND, OREGON,v Assiette?. or @Nn-,HALF me 'orme A.
SAMSON, or PoRTLaNp, aaneen l I `Y BOOKMARK Application led December 5, 1927. Serial No. 237,836.
My invention relates to book marks. The object of my invention is to provide a book mark comprising a clip and a band of soft, flexible material, secured to the clip at one end, the other end of the band being weighted so that it will remain in place on the page which it overlies. And, in this connection, a further object of my invention is to provide a book mark, of the character described, in which the band is made of a soft, preferably textile fabric, with the length of the band adapted to permit the same to be lapped over the marginal surface at the top of the page to be marked, and that, when so lapped over the weighted end of the band will be arranged to overlie only the top of the page. W'ith this construction the so-marked page may be t-urned over from under the mark without danger of tearing the top of the leaf of the book as would tend to be the undesirable result if the mark were made of some stiffer, sharp edged material. rIhus my mark permits the manipulation of the page which it overlies without having first to adjust the mark by hand, but the latter will be lifted up by the lturning over of the page, and then will fall back into place on the next underlying leaf.
An incidental object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive book mark.
rhese and other incidental features of my invention and the details of construction and its mode of operation are hereinafter described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which Fig. l shows a perspective view of my book mark and illustrates the details of construction' Fig. 2 shows in detail a perspective view of the weighted element;
Fig. 3 shows an open book, with my book mark fastened to the back cover;
Fig. i shows in a view similar to Fig. 3, by broken lines, how my book mark is attached to the back cover of the book and illustrates its movement as a page is turned; and
Fig. 5 shows the position of my book mark when the book is closed and the last opened 5() page, marked.
As illustrated in the figures, my book mark i comprises a more or less flexible section a of leather or other suitable material, provided on one end with a fastening device b, also preferably of spring metal, though Celluloid or other suitable substance may be employed.
A weighted element c is fixed to the other end of the section a and is also preferably of metal because of its weight.
The fastening device b in this instance is shown as a clip comprising a body portion e and a spaced tongue f, integral therewith, which may be inserted over the edge of the back cover, the spring-like characteristic of the tongue f tending to hold the clip in place. ,a5 The iiexible section a is secured to an upturned portion g of the body portion e by small rivets 7L. Ilhe weighted element c is fastened to the flexible section a by similar means and is provided with a groove 2', to ,7,0 permit the end of the'flexible element to be fastened to it, in a neat and workman-like manner. l
In the use of my book mark the clip will be fastened to the back cover, and the flexible section, always tending to fall forward, due to the weighted element c will rest on the front cover until the book is opened, when it will rest on the next exposed page. When the page is turnedthe flexible section and weighted element will be pushed outwardly without tearing the page but will fall back on the next page, marking it, if the book is closed, or acting successively on each page until the book is closed by the reader. et
Thus by this construction and arrangement my book markwill function to always automatically indicate the page at which a book has been closed, without attention from the reader.
I claim:
1. A book mark including a clip for Vremovably securing the book mark to a book, said clip including an upstanding portion arranged wholly beyond the leaves of the book when the clip is in position, a flexible section terminally connected to said upstanding portion, and a weighted section carried by the free terminal of the flexible section.
2. A book mark including a clip having a portion to removably engage the cover of a book, said clip having an upstanding rigid portion designed when the clip is in position to be disposed beyond and Wholly free of the leaves of the book, .a flexible strip permanently secured to said upstanding portion, and a Weight secured to the free terminal of the strip, said Weight corresponding in Width and thickness to that of the strip to form an unobstruoting continuation of the strip.
