ELECTRICAL ATTACHMENT PLUG.
Application led July 28, 1925. Serial No. 46,556.
This invention relates to attachment littings for electric circuits, and more particularly is directed to an improvement in an attachment fitting to provide a plurality ot' outlets or receptacles for connecting portable appliances'to an electric power source.
rThe object of the invention is the provision of an improved attachment fitting of the character described constructed of few land simple parts, which is cheap to manufacture, and practical and eilicient to a high degree.
Gther objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consist-s in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of thevarious possible illustrative vembodiments of this invention, y
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing the plug form ofthe device embodying the invention arranged to connect two portable circuits to a screw plug;
Fig. 2%is a side elevational view ofthe de vice shown in Fig. 1 l
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the side cover member removed to expose the interior construction;
Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views taken on lines 4-4 in Fig. 2 and lines 5 5 in Fig. 3 respectively;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a. modified form adapted to be attached at the-ends of portable conductor wires;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of the plug device constructed with a single cover member; and
, Figs. 8 and 9 are cross-sectionalviews taken on lines 8-8 and lines 9-9 in Fig. 7 respec# tively.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a plug attachment device embodying the. invention adapted'to be inserted intov a baseboard Hush receptacle, or a screw plug 11 as shown in Fig. 1. The device 10 may comprise a body portion 12 formed of insulating material such as porcelain, molded insulation, or the like suitable substance, a currentcarrying portion 13. and flat cover members 14'. The current-carrying portion 13 may be secured in any suitable manner to said body portion 12 as by means of metallic eyelets 16 which are preferably molded into the body portion as shown in Fig. 5.'
The current carrying portion 13 is seen to comprise apair of terminal blades 17 and 18 extending outwardly from one side of the body portion 12 and a plurality of pairs of spring contacting members 19, 192t and 20, 20 of any suitable construction extending into through socket passages 12 said pairs of contact members being spaced in 90 degree relation in said body portion (see Fig. 2). The terminal blades 17 and 18 are formed wit-h elongated flat base portions, such as the arcu- 'ate extensions 17a and 18nl respectively, and
the contact members 19, 19, and 20, 20al are formed with flat extension portions 19b and 2Ob respectively, said extensions 17a, 18a and portions 19h, 2Ob being firmly secured to the body portion 12 by means of the eyelet anchors 16. The terminal blades 17 and 18 with their respective corresponding contact members 19, 19a, 20 and 20 are thus united into a substantial unitary structurefwith said contact members extending only partially into the passages 12a to thus eliminate possible short circuits or injury to persons handling the device. v
' The cover members 14 are retained over the current carrying portion 13 on the opposite sides ofthe body portion 12,by suitable megfns such as screw 15 which extends centrally through said body-portion as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Each member 14 is provided with a pair of openings 14 diametrically positioned to permit the insertion of the blades (not shown) vof a plug cap 21 to detachably connect with the spring contacts 19 andv 20a or 19a and 20.
For simplicity and cheapness, each of the contact members 19 and 20a may preferably be formed with single bent portions 19b and 20"'respectively,'and the members 19u and 20 with looped portions 19c and 2()c respectively so as to present smooth receiving A plurality of portable `circuits 23 through the plug caps 21 may then be detaehably connected to the device 10, one on each side thereof as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 6 is shown a modified embodiment ot the invention in the form of a litting. 10a which is adapted to be attached at the ends oi portable conductor wires 24. Here the extending terminal blades are omitted and suitable terminal binding posts such as screws Q5 are provided on the adjacent ends of the arcuate extensions 17a and 18a.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show a modified form ot' the device 10 comprising a body portion 33 having a single cover member St. T he current carrying portion is secured to the body portion 30 on one side thereof by the anchor eyelets 16 and the spring contact members 19, 19a, 2O and 20 extend into sockets or passage openings 32 provided in the body portion 34. Each contact member extends only partially into the opening 34 up to a guard and guiding ledge 321 formed at one side of said opening to eliminate possible short circuits or injury to persons handling the fitting, said ledges 34 serving also to restrict the entrance of said openings to all but cooperatingly constructed terminal blades (such as blades 17 and 18) of another detachable fitting, and to direct such blades to the spring contact member as is well understood.
To Jermit the two-part construction of the modi ed form of device 10"1 described above, the terminal blades 37 and 38 are offset at right angles with respect to the arcuate extensions 3'?"L and 88a and slots 32 are provided to receive the said blades as shown in Fig. 7.
The cover member 34 is retained to the body portion 32 over the current-carrying portion 23 by suitable means such as screw 15, as in the device 1() described above.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. Y
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is toibo understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z- 1. An attachment plug of the character described comprising al one-piece body portion having a plurality ot through-socket openings, and current carrying portions of uniform size and shape carried in spaced relation by said body portion, said current carrying portions including pairs of spring contact members extending Wholly within said socket openings, each of said pairs having its members diamctrically positioned with respect to a common axis thru said body portion, said contact members being disposed to receive independent circuits.
