IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PENClL-Sl -IARPENERS AND-ERASERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,083, dated November 16, 1875; application filed March 17, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. HALL, of Monterey, Monterey county, State of California, have invented an Improved Slate-Pencil Sharpener and Eraser; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improved instrument for sharpening slate-pencils, and with which I have combined an eraser for wiping off the pencil-marks from a slate.

The cutter can be secured in the V-groove by any convenient means; but I prefer to employ a single screw, which passes through one side of the cutter into the block, so that, by taking out the screw, the cutter can be removed and sharpened.

The cavity 0 could be dispensed with, if desired, and the V-shaped cutter secured in a V-groove formed in a straight-faced block. In this case the block would have to be held at an angle to properly sharpen the pencil.

To the back of the block A I secure a piece of felting, cloth, or other soft fibrous material, 0, by means of tacks, cement, or by other suitable means, so that it can be used as an eraser for rubbing the pencil-marks from the slate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a slatepencil sharpener, consisting of the block A,

having the beveled corners 0, chamber 0, a V- groove, 1), in its upper face, the cutters D, provided with the angular V-shaped edges it, and cloth eraser e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
