This invention relates to an improved cover support adapted for holding open the lids or covers of cabinets, phonographs, trunks, chests, boxes, vaults, or similar articles, and
is of the type in which when the cover orlid is raised from its closed position to its limit of upward movement and then released or permitted to descend, said lid or cover is supported or held open, and from this supported position is simply raised a short distance and then can be lowered to its closed position,- this being automatically accomplished entirely by manipulation of the cover or lid and requiring no individual manipulation of the 5 support or lid. x
The present invention provides a support of the character above indicated, which can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied without the use of any special tools or skilled workmanship.
Furthermore, said support is compact an within the casing to prevent injury or displacement and insures the parts to be always preserved in proper cooperative relations whether the lid or cover is in its open upper or supported position or lower and closed position.
The invention consists of structural characteristics and relative arrangement of ele- 0 ments which will be hereinaftermore fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring tothe drawings, 10 is the top section of a usual cabinet, box, trunk, chest, or similar article, provided with its hinged lid 11. Preferably within and at or near the top of the inner wall of the body of the cabinet 10 is secured by suitable screws 12, 12 a plate 13which carries an upwardly turned. pro: jecting pin 14. Said pin 14 is provided at one and preferably its inner end with an inclined surface 15 which inclines downwardly and towards the bottom of the cabinet, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 6, while the outer or other end of said pin 14 carries a guard or guide lug 16. The rear or side of the projecting pin 1-1 towards the hinged lid 11 is provided between the inclined surface 15 and guide lug 16 with a downwardly inclined projection 17.
18 is amovable slide having one and its upper end pivotally connected or mounted on apin 19 attached to the inner side of the lid 11, and the lower or free end ofsaid slide 18 is normally pressed toward the side of the body of the cabinet and in a direction indicated by the arrow 0, by a coiled spring 20 arranged and attached as shown in Figure 2, for purposes to be presently described.
Said movable slide 18 is provided with a slot 21 and a notch 22 communicating with said slot 21', and said slot is so positioned and arranged that the projecting pin 14 can be passed through said slot 21 and acts as a guide and support for-the combined upward, downward and lateral movements of the free or lower end of the slide 18 during I the up and down movement of the lid 11, as -will be presently described. The notch 22 in said slide 18 is adapted to engage the pin 14, and the lug 16 on the end of said pin 1-1 acts as a stop and prevents said slide 18 from being displaced from the outer end of pin 14 during the operation of the device.
On each side of the slide 18 and separated from each other is provided a lug 28 and 24, said lug 23 being preferably on the outer side and a proper distance from the free end of the slide 18, while the lug 24 is at the lower end of the slot 21 and slide 18, and said lugs 23 and 24 are in such position and relation to each other that at the proper time of the phase of operation of the device, said lug 23 will be in contact with the inner side of the body of the cabinet 10. and the lug 24 in contact with the downwardly inclined projection 17 on the pin 14, for purposes to be later disclosed.
Said slide 18 is provided at the lower edge of its slot 21 and situated between the lugs 23 and 24 with a yielding section, which section is formed by mounting a small leaf spring within a rectangular shaped notch 26, so that the lower end of the spring 25 is fixed in a groove 27 while its upper and free end is yieldingly pressed on a beveled seat 28, as clearly shown in Figure 8, and for purposes to be explained to the operation of the invention.
Assuming the parts to be in the position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, in which the lid 11 is held and supported in a raised or elevated position by the notch 22 being in en-- gagement and seated on the projecting-pin 14. If it is desired to lower said l1d 11. one slightly ra1ses sa1d 11d 11, when the lower end of the slide 18 will rise and cause the projecting pin 14 to engage the lowest and inclined portion of the slot 21 and slightly displace the same, and during this motion of the slide 18 the downwardly inclined projection 17 engages the lug 24, and after the notch 22 is free of the pin 14, and above the inclined surface 15, upon further upward movement of the slide 18 and its notch 22, until the lower end. of slot 21 abuts against the pin 14,the inner pointed end of said notch 2 at the upper side of the slot 21 and the free end ofthe slide 18 are pushed over by the lug 24 laterally and towards the inclined surface 15, as indicated in Figure 6, and the lower section of the slot 21 is made to surroundthe inclined surface 15 with the pointed end of the notch 22 resting on the upper portion and top of the downwardly disposed guide of the inclined surface 15, as shown in Figures 8 and 5. V
If the lid 11 is now permitted to descend, the upper edge of the slot 21 of the slide 18 will ride down in engagement with the upper and inclined surface 15 until the lug 23 comes in contact with the plate 13 and inner edge of the cabinet 10 and the inclined projection 17 on pin 14 is opposite the resilient section or leaf spring 25, and upon further downward movement of the lid 11 and connected slide 18, said projection 17 will slide in the rectangular notch 26 and along and in contact with said spring 25 and abut against the beveled seat 28 and assume the position shown in Figures 7 and 8. Upon further lowering of said lid 11 and its connected slide 18, the lug 23 reacting against the plate 13 pushes said slide 18 towards the guide or guard lug 16 on pin 14 agd causes the resilient section or leaf spring 25 to yield and permit the inclined projection 17 to pass through the notch 26 to the other side of the lower portion of the slide 18 and permit the slide 18 and upper portion of its slot 21 to pass down and along the pin 14 until the lid 11 rests on top of and closes the cabinet, as will be readily understood. 1 7
Upon the raising of the lid 11 from its closed position, the upper edge of the slot 21 of-slide 18, due to action of gravity and spring 20, will come in-contact with and slide along the pin 14, and when the upper or pointed end of the notch 22 passes said pin 14, the'lower end of said slide 18 will drop and said notch 22 will engage the upper end of said pin 14 adjacent to the guide lug 16, and upon permitting the lid 11 to descend the lower end of the slide 18, through. its notch 22 engagement, will gravitate on the inclined surface of said pin 14 to the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 and be in position to-support the lid 11 in the open position, and
from which thevarious phases of operation of; the several cooperating parts, just de-' scribed, may be'repeated and need no further disclosure. From the foregoing disclosure of the construction and arrangement ofthe improve" ment and mode of applying and operation of the same, it will be seen that all the objects and advantages recited in the statement of invention have been fully and efiiciently car-' ried out, and while we have shown and described our preferred form, many changes and uses of the invention will readily suggest themselves, as, for example, the same may be applied in connection with window holders 1 and similar combinations or attachments, in which a member is desired to be adjustably hinged to a frame, without many way departing from the salient features hereindi closed and embodied in the claims.
l/Vhat we claim is scope of. the
1. A lid or cover support for-a cabinet and the like comprising in combination, a projecting pin on'the body of saidcabinet, said pin provided with a guiding surface at one end and aguide lug at its other end, and a projection on said pin between said surface and guide lug, a lid pivotally mounted upon the body of said cabinet, a movable slide p'iv-r otally mounted at one end'upon' said lid and its other end free and provided with a slot and a notch communicating with said slot for engagement with said projecting pin, two
separated lugs one of which lugs is on one side of said slide and the other lug is on the other side of said slide, a yielding section in said slide interposed between said two separated lugs and adapted to be engaged by said projection on said pin by the reaction of one ofsaid lugs, and means cooperating with said movable slide to displace its lower end so as to react against the other of said lugs whereby on the reciprocation of the free end of said slide on said projecting pin within the slot, by the raising and lowering of said lid, said free end of the slide is moved laterally between the ends of said projecting pin and on each side of the projection on said pin through the yielding section of said slide to engage and disengage said notch from said projecting pin to permit the lid to be retained in an elevated po sition or assume a closed position.

3. A lid or cover support for a cabinet and the like comprising in combination, a projecting pin on and disposed at an angle to the body of said cabinet, said pin provided with an inclined surface at its end adjacent to the cabinet and normal to the pin and a guide lug at its other end, and a projection on said pin between said inclined surface and guide lug, a lid pivotally mounted upon the body of said cabinet, a movable slide pivotallymounted at one end upon said lid and its other end free and normally pressed to-, wards the body of the cabinet and inclined surface on said pin and provided with a slot having a prolongation inclined to the medial line of said slot andadapted to ride on said pin and a notch communicating with'said slot for engagement with said projecting pin for retaining said lid in its elevated position, two separated lugs one of which lugs is on the outer side of said slide and the other lug is on the inner side of said slide, and a yielding section in said slide adjacent to said slot and interposed between said two separated lugs and adapted to be engaged by said projection on said pin through the reaction of said lug on the outer side of said movableslide, and the lug on the inner side of said slide adapted to react against said projecting pin to move the free end of said slide towards said inclined surface whereby on the reciprocation of the free end of said slide on said projecting pin within the slot, by the raising and lowering of said lid, said free end of theslide is moved laterally between the ends of said projecting pin and on each side of the projection on said pin through the yielding section of said slide to engage and disengage said notch from said projecting pin to permit the lid to be retained in an elevated position or assume a closed position.

A stop for a pivoted member and the like comprising in combination, a frame, a projecting pin on said frame, said pin provided with a guiding surface at one end and a guide lug at its other end, and a projection on said pin between said surface and guide lug, a member pivotally mounted upon said frame, a movable slide pivotally mounted at one end upon said member and its other end .free and provided with a slot and a notch communicating with said slot for engagement with said projecting pin, two separated lugs one of which lugs is on one side of said slide and the other lug is on the other side of said slide, a yielding section in said slide interposed between said two separated lugs and adapted to be engaged by said projection on said pin by the reaction of one of said lugs, and means cooperating with said movable slide to displace its lower end so as to react against the'other of said lugs whereby on the reciprocation of the free end of said slide on said projecting pin within the slot, by the movement of said pivoted member, said free end of the slide is moved laterally between the ends of said projecting pin and on each side of the projection on said pin through the yielding section of said slide to engage and disengage said notch from said projecting pin to permit said pivoted member to be retained in a position removed from the frame or assume a position in contact with said frame.

A stop for a pivoted member and the like comprising in combination a frame, a' projecting pin on saidframe, said pin provided with a guiding surface at one endand a guide at-its other end, a projection onsaid frame interposed between said surface and guide, a member pivotally mounted upon said frame, a movable slide pivotally mounted at one end upon said member and its other end free and provided with a notch for engagement wlth said pro ectmgpm, two separated lugs one of which lugs is on one side of said slide and the other lug is on the other side of said slide, a yielding section in said slide 157 interposed between said two separatedlugs and adapted to be engaged by said pro ection by'the reaction of one of said lugs, and means cooperating with said movable slide to dis- I place its lower end so as to react against the other of said lugs whereby on the reciprocation of the free end of said slide on said projecting pin, by the movement of said pivoted member, said free end of the slide is I moved laterally between the ends of said projecting pin and on each side of the projection through the yielding section of said slide to engage and disengage said notch from said projecting pin to permit said pivoted member to be retainedina position removed from the frame or assume a position in con tact with said frame.
