To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. Donn- ING, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the lcity of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic "Window-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved window catch that can be used on both the upper and lower sash of a window so the sashes can be elevated or lowered to any desired position and be thereby held, doing away with sash weights.
Another object is to provide an improved window catch that engages by gravity.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out inthe appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary portion of a window frame showing portions o-f the upper and lower window sashes in engagement therewith, parts thereof being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 1li-I1, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 1H-1IL Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates a window frame having the usual upper' and lower sash guideways 2 and 3. Mounted in the guideway 2 is the upper sash 4, and in the guideway 3 is mounted the lower sash 5.
In describing this improved type of window catch the catch which is shown in the lower' sash 5 will be more minutely described. A recess 6 is cut in the side edge of the lower sash, and the casing 7, which contains the mechanism relative to the window catch, is mounted in said recess by the screws 8. Pivotally mounted in said casing is a catch 9 having an engaging portion 10. Said catch is mounted on the horizontally arranged pivot 11, which pivot is engaged in the side walls of the casing 7 Pivotally mounted to one end of the catch 9, at 12, is a pendulum 13. l
Formed on the inside of the sash 5 is an opening 14 vwhich leads to the casing 7. Secured to the front side of the window sash is a bracket 15, said bracket covering the opening 14. Pivotally mounted to said bracket 15 is a thumb lever 16, said lever having its inwardly extending end 17 extend .beneath the pendulum 13.
The window frame 1 hasa vertical slot 18 formed therein. Vertically arranged in said slot is a rack 19 having teeth 20. The en. gaging portion 10 of the catch 9 is adapted to extend into the slot 18 through the opening 21 formed in one of the walls of the casing 7. When the lower sash is elevated and allowed to come to a stop, the engaging portion 10 will engage one of the teeth 2O of the rack 19.
bWhen it is desired to lower the window, the lever 16 is engaged, and the extending end portion 17 of said lever will elevate the pendulum 13. This elevating movement of the pendulum will swing the engaging portion 10 of the catch 9 away from the tooth of the rack which it has been engaging into the casing 7. After the window has been lowered, the lever 16 is released. Then the weight of the pendulum 13 will return the engaging portion 10 of the catch 9 into engagement with the tooth thereadjacent.
In order to release the'catch of the upper sash 4, it is necessary to elevate the lower sash sothe pin 22 oanbe engaged. rlhe casing 23 is mounted in the upper sash in a manner -similar to the mounting of the casing 7 on the lower sash. But instead of having the lever, similar to 16, to disengage the catch from the rack teeth 25, the pin 22 is arranged vertically in the lower portion of the upper sash so that a portion thereof will extend beneath the bottom of the upper sash, while the opposite' end of said pin will extend into the casing 23. This pin,
when pressed upwardly, will elevate the pendulum 26 and release the catch 24 from its engaging tooth 25 so that the upper sash can be lowered. Vhen both the upper and lower sashes are raised, the engaging portion ofthe catches 24 and 9, respectively, will be swung away from the rack teeth on account of the upper inclined portions of said catches engaging against said teeth.
In this improved form of window catch, no springs are necessary to actuate the parts, which will make the device simple and inexpensive of manufacture, and it is not so liable to get out of order as in the case where springs are used.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a window sash, and
a window frame, with a window catch carried by said sash, a rack secured to said frame, said catch comprising a pivotally mounted lever, a pendulum pivotally secured to one end of said lever, a casing for l said *lever and pendulum, said pendulum adapted 4to hold one end of said lever` against said rack, said pendulum7 When elevated, adapted to disengage said lever from said rack, anda lifting member carried by said vframe, said catch comprising. a pivotally mounted lever, and a pendulum pivotally secured to one end of said lever, said pendulum adapted to hold one end of said lever against said rack, said pendulum, when elevated, adapted to disenUage said level` from said rack, and a thumb 2level1 carried by said sash for elevating said pendulum.
