Description
J. McGH EE.
PIPE WRENCH.
APPUCATION HLED AUG- 9, I919- Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
FIG-l.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MGGHEE, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Application filed August 9, 1919.
1 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN MoGHnn, 0f Morrison Villa, Tollcross, Glasgow, Scotland, engine fitter, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PipelVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches in which the shank of lower jaw is pivoted to and adjustable longitudinally in or alongside the shank of upper jaw, and has for its object to so construct the wrench as to be able to grip pipes or bolts which are too small to be gripped when jaws are wide apart and thereby obviate the necessity of setting the jaws for different sizes of such.
In carrying out my invention, the inside edge of the shank of the lower jaw is hollowed out at one, two or more places in such a way as to form jaws on the shank. When the object to be gripped is too small for the lower and upper jaw to grip, one of the small jaws on shank may be used and the upper jaw closed in usual manner.
In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into ef feet, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wrench made in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, all hereafter more fully referred to and described.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Serial No. 316,337.
Referring to the drawings, the wrench therein illustrated consists of that type which has two members A and B and jaws C and D moving toward each other, and is so constructed that the object under treatment is gripped between them. The inner surface of the adjustable member 13 of the said wrench is provided with one or more hollows or recesses E, F, (two being shown on the drawings) so as to grip an object which would be too small to be gripped by the jaws of the wrench without altering or adjusting the range or compass of its jaws. If desired, the recesses may be provided with teeth.
Claim:
A wrench comprising a pair of members, each having a jaw and a handle, one of said members being also provided with recesses.
onthe same side of the handle as the jaw, and spaced from the jaw, the other member being pivotally and adjustably connected to the first; mentioned member and the jaw of said other member presenting a curved convex face which is arranged to cooperate with either the jaw or either of the recesses of the first named member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MoGHEE.
