Description

PATENTED NOV. 29, 1904.
' G. W. MILLER. PIPE WRENCH.
APPLIGATIONFILED MAR. 30. 1904.
ll rrn STATES Patented November 29, 1904:.
GEORGE W. MILLER, OF BUSHNELL, ILLINOIS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,411, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed M rch 30, 1904. Serial No. 200,670. (No model.)
To all, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bushnell, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches, the object being the provision of a pipe-wrench which will instantly bite or impinge upon the pipe and permit the easy turning thereof, which canbe instantly adjusted to pipes of various sizes, which cannot possibly slip after being adjusted, and which will possess merit in point of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness of production.
With this object in View my invention consists of a pipe-wrench embodying novel features of construction and combinations of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my wrench with the parts in the position they occupy when clamping a pipe or when in use. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the wrench, and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation with one of the jaws removed.
In the drawings the letter A designates the handle or grasping portion of the wrench, having its lower end provided on one side with the recessed or bifurcated portion B, formed with engaging portions C and having its lower end reduced to form the seats I) on each side for the jaws E, which are mounted on the reduced portion by means of the pin F, and the handle is provided with. the lugs G, which are adapted to engage the wall of the recessed portion H of said jaws, and the reduced portion J of the handle is formed with the extension K, to which is pivoted one end of the link L, to the other end of which is pivoted the grippingchain M, which is adapted to pass around the pipe and fit in the recessed or bifurcated portion B and have the pins N thereon engage the portions 0 of said bifurcated portion, this serving to secure the chain at any desired point. A
It will be observed that I provide a wrench which can be instantly adjusted to pipes of any desired size and that the pair of jaws being free will engage the pipe and instantly bite or impinge against it and secure a firm hold thereon to permit easy manipulation of the wrench. 'It will also be apparent that my wrench is composed of very few parts and cannot possibly get out of order and will withstand the most severe usage and that it can be produced at such a price as to bring it within reach of all desiring a practical and useful wrench.
I claim 1. A pipe-wrench consisting of the handle, having the bifurcated portion on one side and having its end reduced to form the seats for the jaws, the pair of jaws pivoted in said seats, and the chain having one end connected to the reduced end of the handle and constructed to pass around the pipe and engage in the bifurcated portion, said handle having lugs formed in the curved portion of said seats and said jaws having recesses in which said lugs lit and retain the jaws in proper relation.
2. A pipe-wrench consisting of the handle, the bifurcated or recessed portion on one side, the reduced end forming the jaw-seats and having the extension, the link pivoted to said extension, the chain connected to said link and adapted to have its free portion engage the bifurcated portion, and the pair of jaws pivoted to said reduced end, said handle having lugs formed in the curved portion of said seats and said jaws having recesses in which said lugs lit and retain the jaws in proper relation.
