Description
S. L. ADELSON.
COMBENATION SHAKER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-ll. 1919.
1,348,468, Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
i1 W JR 19 I 25 2? UNITED STATES SAMUEL L. .AJDEIJSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
COMBINATION -SHAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed August 11. 1919. Serial No. 316,527.
To all whom it may 0071mm Be it known that I, Pinion]. L. ADELsON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of ook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Shakers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of combination salt and pepper shaker wherein a quantity of both salt and pepper is contained in separate compartments, and either thereof may be shaken from the con tainer as desired by a simple manipulation of the cover cap, which by adjustment separates and closes the apertures for discharge of the salt and pepper from their respective compartments.
It is an object therefore of this invention to provide a combination salt and pepper shaker wherein an adjustable cover cap is provided which by manipulation during the shaking operation will permit discharge of either salt or pepper as desired, with the cover cap normally spring impelled into position to permit discharge of the salt from the shaker and by adjustment closing the salt discharge and opening that for the pepper.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a form of of the cover cap of the form.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the device embodying this invention, with parts omitted.
Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 2.
Description.
The salt and pepper shaker consists of a container denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 1, which may be made of lass, or any other suitable material, and 1s provided on its interior with a central partition wall 2, extending from the bottom to the top of the container and flush therewith, and dividing said container into two compartments 3 and 4 respectively. Secured on the upper portion of the container, which is slightly reduced in diameter for the purpose to receive the same secured thereon in any suitable manner by cement or otherwise, is a fixed ring 5.
In the form of construction illustrated in Flgs. l, 2, 3 and 4 respeptively, is shown a linearly slidablc top plate 19 having apertures 20 and 21 respectively for pepper and salt, and it is associated with a detachable stationary aperturcd cap element 23, cor responding to the cap element 7 previously described. To hold the top plate 19 connected with the cap 23, a portion of the metal of the plate 19 is struck downwardly, and engaged through parallel slots in the cap 23, and is bent laterally to prevent separation of the two elements 19 and 23, as denoted by the reference numeral 24. The finger piece 25, is bent downwardly on one side of the plate 19, and a leaf spring 26 is secured on the element 23, thrusting outwardly against the finger piece 25 to hold the slidable plate 19 in a position such that the respective apertures for the salt in the plate 19 and cap 23 are in register.
A retaining means is provided to hold the cap 23 on the container 1. around the ring 5, and for this purpose said ring is provided with a projection or lug 27, which projects through a slotted portion of the downturncd flange of the cap 23. A wire spring element 28 is secured in an eye 29, secured on the cap 23, and is sprung downwardly beneath the lug 27, and upwardly and over the lug 30, provided on the cap 23.
Operation.
In the form of device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 respectively, the leaf spring 26 normally holds the linearly slidable top plate 19 in a retracted position with the apertures 21 thereof in register with the corresponding salt apertures in the cap 23 therebeneath, and salt may readily be shaken from the device. In order to obtain pepper from the shaker, the fingers are used to press inwardly upon the finger piece 25, thereby sliding the plate 19 to move the apertures 21 out of register with those beneath, and to bring the apertures 19 into register with those beneath, for discharge of pepper. Release of the finger piece 25 permits the leaf spring 26 to return the top plate 19 into initial position for discharge of salt from the shaker.
While I have described my invention as a salt and pepper shaker, it IS obvious that it is adapted for many other uses and other materials than salt and pepper may be used. Also the number of compartments may be varied as Well as the operation of the discharge controlling mechanism to permit simultaneous or separate discharge of the contents from any one or all of the compartments as desired.
am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a Wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and I therefore do not urpose patent granted otherwlse than limiting the by the prior art.
necessitated Claim.
A combination shaker of the class described comprising a container, a central partition dividing the container into separate compartments, an apertured stationary cover removably secured on the container, an apertured cover slidable on the stationary cover with the apertures therein adapted to register with the apertures in the stationary cover, downward projections on the slidable cover projecting through slots in the stationary cover for securing the slidable cover to the stationary cover, and a spring between the slidable cover and the stationary cover acting normally to hold the apertures over one compartment in register and the apertures over the other compartment out of register.
In testimony whereof I have hereuntol subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
