WINDOW-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1916.
Application filed July 22, 1915. Serial No. 41,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J osErH E. CALLow and DIRK Knons, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in window sash looks. I
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for limiting the movement of either one of a pair of slidable window sashes past each other, whereby it becomes impossible to open either one of said sashes far enough for a burglar or other person to enter a window, the sashes of which are provided with our device.
A further object of our invention is to provide a fastener which may be easily and quickly removed from the sash when it is desirous to wash or repair the windows.
Our invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a. front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of a portion of a pair of window sashes provided with our fastening device.
Lik parts are identified by the same reference numerals in both views.
1 is the upper sash.
2 is the lower sash.
3 is the meeting rail of the lower sash, and 4 is the meeting rail of the upper sash.
The device thus far described is of ordinary construction. Invention herein is predicated, more especially, upon the bracket which comprises the vertical plate 5 provided with a horizontal lug 6 and plate supporting screw 7. The vertical plate 5 is provided with an elongated slot 8 for the reception of the screw 7, and the center of said slot is widened at 9 to enable the user to withdraw the plate from the head of the screw, the center opening 9 being sufficiently wide to permit the plate 5 to be withdrawn from the head of the screw.
It will be understood that the plate 5 is secured to the upper sash by inserting the head of the screw through the enlarged central portion 9 of the slot 8, when said device is free to drop until the screw 7 is brought into the upper end of said slot. hen, however, the upper sash 1 is lowered the horizontal member 6 is brought in contact Withthe upper surface of the meeting rail 8 whereby the upper sash is prevented from moving down except a limited distance, while by raising the lower sash 2 the meeting rail 3 is brought in contact with the horizontal member 6 and is thereby prevented from being raised farther past the upper sash.
Thus it is obvious that the device may serve both to prevent lowering the upper sash or raising the lower sash far enough to permit a person from entering either below the lower sash or -above the upper sash. When, however, it is necessary to wash the windows or move them farther past each other for the purposes of cleaning or repairing the same the bracket comprising the vertical plate 5 and horizontal lug 6 may be readily removed from the screw 7 as stated, by raising said bracket far enough to bring the central opening 9 in alinement with the head of said screw.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
In a device of the described class, a metallic bracket comprising a vertical plate provided with a vertical slot enlarged near its center for the reception of a screw head, and a horizontal lug projecting from the front side of said plate adapted to bear upon the upper rail of the lower sash, in combination with a screw having its front end in said slot its opposite end being adapted to be inserted in one of the vertical rails of the upper sash, the enlarged center of said slot being such as to permit said bracket to be withdrawn over the head of said screw.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH E. OALLOW. DIRK KROES.
