Description
l To all whom it 'may concern THOMAS M. vBann-or NEW Yoan, n. Y.
` Letters Patent No. 111,302, dated January d1, 1871.
IMPRovEMENT IN MiLK-cANs.
The Schedule referred to in these -Iietters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BELL, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and usefni Improvement in Mill-0ai1s; and I do hereby deciare that vthe following is a'fnll, clear, and exact description thereof, whiclrwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification, in which- The figure is a detail vertical section of the lower part oi the body of a can illustrating my invention.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved means for connecting the body and bottom of a milk-cau so as to make it stronger, Amore durable, and more capable of withstanding the hard usage to which milk-cans are exposed when in use; and
It'consists of the combination of ashouldered hoop or baud with the bottom and body ofthe can, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents'the bottom of the can, which may be made concave or convex upon its upper side, or flat, as may bedesircd.
The edge of .the bottom A is turned downward, as lshown in the figure, to overlap the upper edge ot' the hoop or band B.
The band or hoop B should be made of wroughtiron,`and of such a thickness as to give it the necessary strength.
The outer side ot the upper edge of the hoop or band B is rabbeted, to receive the edge of the botton A and the lower edge of the body G.
lThe lower end of the body G of the can should lit` closely around the turned-down edge oi' the bottom A, and its lower edge should rest upon the shoulder ot' the rabbeted hoop or band B.
`The parts A B Oare all securely soldered or riveted to each other.
In case the body C be made of heavy stock, so as to require no bands orhoops around it, the lower part ot' the hoop B may project beyond the sides of the body C.
But in case the body C beA made ot' lighter stock,
sons to require hoops or bands around it, the outer surface of the hoop or band B should be flush with the outer surface ot' the body O, and a hoop, D,
` should be put around the lower end of the can, so as to cover the joint between the band Band the lower edge of the body C, overlapping the said parts, as shown in -the igure.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as `new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The hoop or band B, rabbeted around the outer sideof its upperv edge to receive the turned-down edge ot' the bottom A and the lower edge ofthe body (l, in combination with the said bottom A and body C, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth, whether the hoop D be used or not;
The above specification of my invention me this 13th day ot' December, 1870.
THOMAS M. BELL.
