Description

S. wHVrNuM.
Coal-Scutcles.
N0.l50,92l. Patented May 12,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
SAMUEL WHITNUM, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK. i
IMPROVEMENT lN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,921, dated May'l, 1874; application tiled March 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, S. VHITNUM, of Green Point, Long Island, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Method of Constructing Goal-Hells, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ol' reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of coal-hods or other sheet-metal vessels in three separate pieces-body, bot` tom, and rim-riveted together so as to form double thicknesses of metal entirely around the vessel for a suitable distance'above and below the bottom of the body, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side view of a coal-hod embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section; Fig. 3, plan of the bottom 5 and Fig. 4, plan of the rim.
A represents the body ot' the coalhod, B is the bottom thereof, and C is the rim projecting downward below the bottom and forming the foot or support for the hod. The body A may be made of any desired form or shape, except that at its lower end the sides should be perfectly vertical for a short distance, as shown at a. The bottom B is also made of a single piece of sheet metal pressed to forni an upward-projectin g rim, b. At about the middle this rim is pressed so as to form a cireumferential offset, making an inside shoulder, ir, and an outside shoulder, y. The rim O is formed of a strip of sheet metal in any suitable form or shape. This rim is fitted around the outside of the bottom B, its upper edge coming against the shoulder y on the rim b when the two are riveted together. The body A is then inserted within the riln b of the bottom B, so that its lower end will rest against the interior shoulder w on said rim, and these parts are then also riveted together. By this mode of construction there are two thicknesses of metal above the bottom of the body and two below, making the hod strong and tight. They can also be manufacturedmneh faster than by the ordinary inode of making them.
Pails, buckets, or other sheet-metal vessels may be made in the same manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bottoni B formed in 011e piece and provided with oftset b and shoulder .'12, in combination with the body A, secured to the inside oi' said offset, and the resting-rim O, secured to the outside of the bottom and beneath shoulder w, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in pre-sence ot' two witnesses.
