TROWEL.

W 1 33 m Charlesf. Johnson, I is gMfi CHARLES E JOHNSON, 0E N YORK, NY Y.
TROWEL.
Specification of Letters-Patent. I PatentedJan, 18-, 191.6
ApplicationfiledAugust'4, 1914. Serial No. 854,934.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I',-CHARLEsE. JOHNSON,
a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county o f'New-York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trowels, of which 'thefollbwing is 'a' specification, such as will enable those skilled in" the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to trowels and particularly to devices of this class used in inside finishing work and in laying cement floors and in forming grooves or curved corners therein, and also finishing the walls of buildings or apartments so as to provide corners which are round or circular in cross section, and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists ofa trowel, constructed or formed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are design-ato l by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a back view of my improved trowel. Fig. 2 a central, longitudinal sectionon the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a trowel a comprising a central or body position al having a back portion 1) and a handle a. The body portion a is preferably formed from, or stamped from a piece of sheet metal and is oblong in form and said body portion is also approximately concavo-convex in transverse section at all points or in other words, the body of the trowel, on the outer side thereof is convex in cross section throughout its extent.
The central back portion of the trowel, longitudinally thereof, is straight or plain, throughout its extent and secured thereto is a plate 0 having a projecting shank portion 0 with which the handle 0 is connected and said handle ranges longitudinally of the central longitudinal part of the back portion of the trowel.
The body portion a of the trowel is provided with integral extensions 11* and b at the ends thereof which are also preferably concavo-conrex transversely and longitudinally as clearly shown at b and the curve of the body portion and the extensions 1)" and b of-the= trowel, longitudinally and trans-x ve'rsely is such that thetopedge thereof is 2111 111 thessame' plane.
'The' sides: of thei end extension 12 of the trowelare formed on a continuous, longitudlnal curve but the sides of the opposite extensiomb are curvedmore abruptlyas' shown at b which makes the extension narrower than the extension 6 and this also forms abrupt curves 6 in the side end portions of the body portion of the trowel as clearly shown in Big. 1, but my invention is not limited to the exact longitudinal curves, shown on either end portion of the body portion of the trowel.
The plate 0 is riveted or secured to the body or back of the trowel by pins or similar devices (Z having outer end heads (Z which are countersunk in said body or back, so as to make the outer surface thereof, smooth and even throughout.
While I have shown and described the trowel as concavo-convex, bcth in cross and longitudinal section, it will be understood that this is not absolutely necessary and this form is only employed for the purpose of making the device as light as possible, all that is necessary being that the outer surface of the trowel be convex in cross and longitudinal section, as herein shown and described.
My improved trowel may be used by masons and plasterers for any purpose,
wherever concave work is required and is particularly adapted for use in making concave edges or corners and doing what is known as flowing or running work in making cornices, and in forming or making grooves or the like in stable and cellar floors and, as will be understood, devices of this class may be made of any desired size, and the side and end edges thereof may be given any preferred degree of curvature.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trowel comprising an elongated body portion, the bottom surface of which is of the same convex curvature in crossv section throughout its extent, extensions provided at the ends of said body portion, the under surfaces of which are upwardly curved brth longitudinally and transversely, and a bandle provided on said body portion.
2. A trowel comprising an elongated body portion, the bottom surface of which is of throughout its extent, extensions provided at the ends of said body-portion, the under surfaces of which are upwardly curved both longitudinally and transversely, the extensions being of diminishing width toward their outer, extremities, and a handle pro vided on said body portion.
8. A trowel comprising an elongatedbody portion, the bottom surface, of'whioh is, of the same convex curvature in cross section throughout its extent, extensions provided at the ends of said body portion, the under surfaces of which are upwardly curved both Copies 0! this patent may be longitudinally and transversely, the extensions being of diminishing width toward their outer extremities and one of said extensions being reduced in transverse dimensions more than the other, and a handle provided on said body portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 3rd day of August, 1914:.
; CHARLES E. JOHNSON.
