SERVING TABLE. nrmonmx IILED JAN. 23. 1911.
Pat ented Mar. 26, 1912.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ERNEST DAVIS, 0F AUBURN, NEW YORK.
SERVING-TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the. county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Serving- Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic serving tables and the leading object of my invention is the provision" of a table of this character which will operate with ease to present the food as desired and which will be of simple and inexpensive construction and present an attractive and ornamental appearance.
To attain the desired object my invention consists of a table having spring means for rotating the table to present the food as required and a brake or stopping device to retain the table in proper relation.
The invention also consists-of a serving table embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete table. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of one of the brake levers, and Fig. 4 represents a detail view of the pawl and ratchet used in connection with the spring operating mechanism.
It will be understood that my table is placed upon the usual tables employed in dining rooms and is constructed to receive the food to be served, and the device consists of the base or support A, from which rises the staff B having the extended portion G of reduced size. Pivoted or fulcrumed at D upon the base are two hand levers E, formed with an arm F, terminating at their upper ends in a brake G, and having the lower forked end H which is pivoted/at J, to the sliding collar K, which collar is normally held down by the coiled spring L. The upper end of the spring L bears against the lower reduced end of the hollow cap M, which is mounted on the stafi and has the reduced opening N, to snugly fit upon the lower portion of the reduced extension of the staff, and the cap is further provided with a ball track 0 in which are the balls P, forming ball-bearings for the table Q, of my device.
Secured to the table Q and surrounding Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 23, 1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Serial No. 604,204.
and projecting above the extended end of the staff is the barrel or sleeve R, carrying the cap S, adapted to form a bouquet holder, and to the upper end of the sleeve is secured the casing T, in which is mounted the stud U,,having a head V, for turning the stud, a ratchet wheel W, engaged and retained by the spring pawl X, and connected at its lower end to the spring Y, whose lower end is rigidly secured to the upper end of the stafi extension O.
In normal position theparts are in the relation shown in Fig. land the spring brakes engage the periphery or edge of the table and retain the table, now upon the bearing down of either of the levers the brake is released from the table and said table turns under the impulse of the spring in the sleeve and brings the desired articles upon the table in reach of the person, as will be apparent, It is simply necessary to keep the spring under the proper tension by winding it through the medium of the pawl and ratchet devices and'the brake-mechanism will instantly release the device to allow the table to turn and will engage and retain the table in the desired position.
A serving table constructed according to my invention will prove particularly desirable in cafes, dining rooms and restaurants as it is an article of decorative appearance and would save a great amount of time and labor.
One of the most important features of my table is the construction of the combination hand levers and brake, the hand lever being formed with a lower forked end connected with the sliding collar and having an integral arm carrying a brake, thus making a the said support and having formed integral therewith a pair of brake arms extending upwardly and having a portion adapted to engage the edges of the table, said collar being normally retained in position by a coiled spring interposed between the collar and a cap mounted in bearings contacting against the underface of the table and upon which the table revolves when one of the levers is depressed, and means mounted in the upper reduced portion of the support for revolving said table when the brakes are released.
2. In a serving table, the combination of a base, a standard rising therefrom, a cap mounted on the standard immediately below and contacting with the table whereby the table is revolved through the medium of a spring mounted in the upper reduced portion of said standard, said spring having a pawl and ratchet mechanism for adjusting its tension, a spring mounted on said standard immediately below said cap, a collar slidably mounted on the lower portion of said standard below said spring, and a series of hand levers fulcrumed on the base and pivotally connected to said sliding collar, said hand levers having brake arms formed integral therewith and extending upwardlyto engage the edges of the table, said brake arms being adapted to be retion of said staff, a cap mounted thereabove,
a spring interposed between said collar and cap, levers fulcrumed on the base and having their lower ends pivoted to the collar, said levers having brake arms formed integral therewith, said brake arms having a portion adapted to engage the edge of the table, a spring mounted in the sleeve of the upper reduced portion of said staff for revolving the table upon the bearings in said cap when either of said hand levers is depressed and means for retaining said spring under tension, said means consisting of a pawl and ratchet mounted in the casing of the upper reduced portion of the staff.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
