To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMEs J. RoNAN and JOHN F. BARRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to hangers, and although designed for general use, it is especially adapted to be used in public places, such as clubs, hotels, restaurants and shops, and has for its object to provide a coat and hat hanger, with means for detachably holding other articles, such as canes and umbrellas. This object we accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, an'd in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the bracket shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan of an operating lever.

As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents a fastening plate having a hat hook 2 connected therewith. A bracket 3 extends outward from the plate 1 and is provided on its outer end with a coat hook 4. A clamping plate 5 is attached to the outer end of the bracket 3 preferably by means of a clip 6 having screws 7. A lever 8 is provided with a tongue 9 and a thumb piece 10 and held between the clamping plate 5 tand bracket 3 by any suitable means, such as studs 11 attached to the bracket 3 adapted to form bearings lfor the trunnions 12 ofthe operating lever. The inner end of the plate 5 is cut away at 13 in a circular line, and opposed to the inner end of the clamping plate is a bearing block 14 having a recessed bearing 15 adapted with the cut away inner end of the clamping plate 5 to receive and hold the stem 16 of an umbrella, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. A clamp 17 is pivotally connected with the hanger by means of a pin 18, and is provided with a socket 1 9 adapted to receive the end of a cane 20, also indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The free outer end of the clamp 17 is curved or beveled so as to serve as a thumb piece or lever to operate the latch. if desired, be connected with the bracket 3 by means of a chain connection 23 so .as to be placed over the ribs oi an umbrella when the umbrella is held in the hanger.

When the device is in operation, the thumb piece of the lever 8 is depressed, thereby raising the tongue 9 of the lever so as to enable said tongue in turn to raise the free inner end of the clamping plate 5, thereby releasing said end of the clamping plate from the shank 16 of an umbrella, and permitting the umbrella to be withdrawn from the hanger. The shank of an umbrella is attached to the hanger by iirst depressing the thumb picee 10 of the lever S thereby raising the free end of the clamping plate 5. As pressure is relaxed iromthe thumb piece 10 the clamping plate, which is preferably of spring metal, returns to its normal position and clamps with its curved inner end the shank of the umbrella end. When the ring 22 is used in connection with the holder the umbrella is inserted within the ring before placing the shank of the umbrella in the socket 15 of the hanger. A cane 20 may be secured by the clamp 17 by moving the free end of the clamp outward against the tension ofthe spring 21, and placing the cane 2O within the socket 19.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hanger having a bracket provided with a spring actuated clamping plate, a lever having a tongue bearing against said plate, and a socket member cooperating with the inner end of said clamping plate.

2. A hanger having a bracket provided with a bearing block, a spring actuated clamp provided with a recess opposite to said block, and a lever for operating said clamp.

3. A hanger having a bracket provided with a clamping plate of spring metal, a lever 100 names to this specication in the presence of 105 two subscribing witnesses.
