PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 8, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 659,118.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Herschel, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvementsin plows and more particularly to improvements in the construction of the plow share and of the plow point.
The object of the invention is to combine with a plow share a point which is detachably connected thereto and to provide the share and the point with co-acting devices which form a landside.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an inverted plan of a plow share and point constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the point detached from the share; Fig. 3 is a plan of the point and also a plan of a portion of the share; Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the share and point; Fig. 5 is a similar View from the landside side; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 3; and Fig. 7 is a similar View taken on the plane indi cated by the line b b of Fig. 3.
The share 1 is provided with the usual cutting edge 2 and is also provided, near its upper side, with the usual openings 8 for the heads of the bolts employed to detachably secure the share to the lower portion of a mold-board.
In accordance with my invention I form the share with a sole-flange 4 on its under side near its landside edge so that the landside edge of the share projects beyond and overhangs the sole-flange. The length of the sole-flange is such that its front end projects forwardly beyond the front corner of the share as at 6. The front corner of the share has a recess 7 on its upper side where by a transverse shoulder 8 is formed at the rear end of the said recess. The share is further provided with a counter-sunk opening 9 for the hub of a bolt presently described. I also, in accordance with my invention, provide a point 10 which is used in connection with the share and is detachable therefrom so that should either the point or share become worn or broken it may be readily replaced by another at minimum expense. The point, which may he of the form here shown or of any suitable form is, in acorn-dance with my invention, provided on its under side with a landside 11 which projects rearwardly therefrom and is of a size and shape adapting it to cover the outer side of the landside surface of the sole flange 1 when the point is attached to the share. The point is formed with a vertical slot 12 open at its lower side to receive the soleflange. The sole-flange has its inner side at a slight angle to its outer side and converging toward the same forwardly. The slot 12 is similarly shaped so that the slot and the front portion of the sple-l1ange form a wedge connection between the point and the share. The point is also formed, at its rear end, with an arm 13 which bears under the front corner of the share and with a recess 14 which is partly above the slot 12 and partly above the arm 13, the size and shape of the said recess being such as to enable the reduced front corner 7 of the share to fit in the said recess and, hence, cause the rear portion of the point to fit on the recessed upper surface 7 of the share and the rear edge of the point to bear against the shoulder 8. The arm 13 of the point has an opening 15 coincident with the opening 9 of the share to receive a bolt 16. The landside 11 of the point and the sole-flange of the share also have coincident openings to receive a securing bolt 17. Hence the share and the point are securely connected together but may be readily detached by first removing the bolts.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A plow share having a sole-flange on its under side spaced from its landside edge, in combination with a point having a landside formed therewith and extending rearwardly therefrom to bear against the outer side of the sole-flange and under the proj ecting landside edge of the share.
2. A plow share having a sole flange on its under side spaced from its landside edge and also projecting from its front side, in combination with a point having a landside formed therewith and extending rearwardly therefrom to bear against the outer side of the sole-flange and under the projecting landside edge of the share, the point being further provided with a slot in its under side to receive the projecting front portion of the sole-flange of the share.
3. A plow share having a sole-flange on its under side near its landside edge and also projecting from its front side and further provided with a front cornervrecessed on its upper side so that a shoulder is formed at the rear side of said recess, in combination with a point having a landside formed therewith and extending rearwardly therefrom to bear against the outer side of the sole-flange and under the landside edge of the share, the point being further provided with a vertical slot in its under side to receive the projecting front portion of the sole-flange of the share and being also provided with a recess to receive the front corner of the share and With a rearwardly extending arm to bear under the share, the rear edge of the point abutting against the said shoulder of the share so that the upper side of the point is flush with that of the share.
4. A plow share having a sole-flange on its under side near its landside edge and also projecting from its front side and further provided with a front corner recessed on its upper side so that a shoulder is formed at the rear side of said recess, in combination with a point having a landside formed therewith and extending rearwardly therefrom to bear against the outer side of the solefiange and under the landside edge of the share, the point being further provided with a vertical slot in its under side to receive the projecting front portion of the sole-flange of the share and being also provided with a recess to receive the front corner of the share and with a rearwardly extending arm to bear under the share, the rear edge of the point abutting against the shoulder of said share so that the upper point of the shoulder is flush with that of the share and means to detachably connect the share and the point together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
