B. B. JAMES.
PLOW.
No. 415,249. Patented Nov. 19, H
Eda/071233522268 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD BRADFORD JAMES, OF TIIOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,249, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed June 5, 1889. Serial lio- 313,l89. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BRADFORD JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plows; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the landside adjusted to run a little higher. Fig. 3 is a view showing an ordinary turning-plowshare. Fig. l is view of the upper member of the standard.
The plow-beam A is of the usual or any preferi ed construction, and the handles B are secured to the rear end of the same in the ordinary manner. The plow-standard O is constructed in two members, the upper member D being provided at its upper front corner with the overhanging lip E, which is adapted to engage over the beam, and is secured pivotally thereto by means of a bolt F, as clearly shown. The upper rear corner of the member D is provided with a vertical eX- tension G, having a slot H, through which and the beam the securing-bolt I is passed. At its lower end the upper member D of the standard is provided with a groove J, and, with the bolt holes K, opening into said groove. The lower member of the standard L is provided at its upper end with a tongue or extension M, which is adapted to fit into the groove J, and is provided with the bolt-holes N, which are adapted to register with the bolt-holes K, and the securing-bolts are passed through the registering bolt-holes.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the lower member of the standard as constructed especially to carry an ordinary plow shovel or scraper or other small plowshare, and the landside is composed of a small plate 0, having its front end pivoted to the lower end of the standard, and provided at its lower edge with the horizontal plate I which serves as a runner and guide for the landside and also to throw the dirt away from the share. To the rear end of the landside I pivot the lower end of a brace or hanger Q, the upper end of Which is provided with a longitudinal slot R, and the securing-bolt I passes through the said slot. The said brace or hanger can thus be adjusted so as to cause the landside to run ata greater or less depth, as Will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 2.
I11 Fig. 3 I have shown an ordinary turning-plowshare provided with my improve ments. In this form of the device the brace and pivoted landside are dispensed with; but the standard is composed of two members connected by a tongue and groove, as clearly shown.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a plow in which any desired style of share can be used, and which is so constructed that the diiferent styles of shares may be easily interchanged. My improved construction is also advantageous for the reason that, as the standard is made in two members, the lower member, which receives all the wear, can be readily replaced when worn out without necessitating the provision of an entirely new standard.
My device is very simple in its construction, and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the plow-beam, the standard, the landside pivoted to the side of the standard and extending rearward therefrom, the brace havingits lower end pivoted to the rear end of the landside and its upper provided with a vertical longitudinal slot, and the securing-bolt passed horizontally through the said slot into the beam, as set forth.
2. The plow-standard C, constructed in two members, the upper member D being provided at one end with overhanging lip E, the pivotal bolt F, and the slot H at the other end of said member, the groove J at the bottom of the member, and the member L, provided with the tongue M, fitting in the groove J and held therein by bolts, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affiXed my signature in presence oi two witnesses.
EDWARD BRADFORD JAMES.
