COMBINED BED AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 21, 1913.
Application filed August 21, 1912. Serial No. 716,253.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IENRY M. KEITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Saline and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Beds and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination furniture and more particularly to combination beds and tables.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a structure of this char acter which may be readily converted into either a bed or a table and is provided with means for storing or holding bed clothes when the device is used as a table.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of this character wherein the head and foot boards of the bed may be readily converted into a table top and whereby the rails of the bed may be converted into table legs, the bed supporting legs being utilized for end braces when the device is in table forming position.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device arranged as a bed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the device arranged for a table. Fig. 4c is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the side rails of the bed which also act as the supporting members for the table top, as will be hereinafter described. These members each have secured to opposite ends the bracing and supporting plates 3 which are provided with arcuate slots 4 and hinged to the ends of the rails 1 and 2 are continuations thereof which are indicated at 5 and which carry suitable pins 6 to travel in the slots 4 for limiting the movement of said extensions or continuations in either direction. The rails consisting of the parts 1 and 2 and their extensions 5 are braced. apart by diagonal struts 7 connected to the lower end of the plate 3 and by transverse braces 8 extending between the extensions 5 and adapted to lie in the same plane with the braces 7 when the extensions 5 are thrown to operative position to form table supporting legs, as will be hereinafter described. hen in bed forming position, as shown in Fig. 1, the extensions 5 have depending therefrom, suit able supporting legs 9 having casters 10 on their ends and the opposite legs of each side of the bed having apertures to receive looking pins 11 which are utilized to connect the legs 9, as shown in Figs. 3, to form end braces for the extensions 5 when in table forming position, the braces 8 in this position forming side bracesfor the table.
Pivot-ally connected to an intermediate portion of the extensions are side pieces 12 which are connected together by the head and foot pieces 13 and 14, the former being somewhat wider than the latter and both adapted to be limited in their downward movement by stop lugs 15 which are carried by the extensions 5 and adapted to be engaged by the side pieces 12. These members 13 and 14 are preferably connected together in table forming position, as shown in Fig. 3, by means of a hook and eye connection 16, as shown, or in any other suitable manner. The spring mattress for the bed is constructed in hinged sections 17, 18 and 19, all of which are hingedly connected together by resilient slats 20. The mattress sections may be supported upon the side rails in any suitable manner so as to be removable therefrom when it is desired to convert the bed into a table. WVhen this is done, the mattress sections are folded and placed on the braces 7 and 8 and the bed clothes packed upon the top of the mattress.
What is claimed is 1. In combination furniture, separated side rails, extensions hinged thereto and adapted to aline with the side rails or to fold at right angles thereto, means carried by the side rails for limiting the movement of said'extensions, legs carried by the extensions for supporting the same, means carried by the legs for connecting the same together when the extensions are arranged at right angles to the side rails, together with a sectional spring mattress adapted to be connected to the side rails and extensions.
2. In combination furniture, separated side rails, extensions hinged thereto and adapted to aline with the side rails or to fold at right angles thereto, means carried by the side rails for limiting the movement of said extensions, legs carried by the extensions for supporting the same, means mattress when disconnected from the side carried by the legs for connecting the same rails and extensions, together with head and together when the extensions are arranged foot sections hinged to the extensions and at right angles to the side rails, braces conadapted to fold over the side rails.
5 necting the side rails, braces connecting the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 15 extensions at opposite ends of the side rails; in presence of two witnesses.
said last-named braces adapted to aline with HENRY M. KEITH. the braces connecting the side rails when Witnesses: the extensions are arranged at right angles W. H. BROWN,
10 to the side rails to form a support for the ROY MARTIN.
