側触媒は酸化能力を有する。下流側触媒は、排気流通表面上に貴金属の触媒粒子が担持されていると共に触媒粒子の周りには塩基性の排気流通表面部分が形成されている。排気浄化触媒は、排気浄化触媒に流入する炭化水素の濃度を予め定められた範囲内の振幅および予め定められた範囲内の周期でもって振動させると排気中に含まれるNOXを還元する性質を有すると共に、炭化水素濃度の振動周期を上記予め定められた範囲よりも長くすると排気中に含まれるNOXの吸蔵量が増大する性質を有している。機関運転時に排気浄化触媒に流入する炭化水素の濃度を上記予め定められた範囲内の振幅および上記予め定められた範囲内の周期でもって振動させ、排気中に含まれるNOXを排気浄化触媒において還元する制御を行なうように形成されている。上流側触媒は、触媒粒子が担持された上流側基体と、上流側基体を収容する上流側容器とを含み、排気に含まれる炭化水素を部分酸化し、部分酸化された炭化水素を下流側触媒に供給する。下流側触媒は、触媒粒子が担持された下流側基体と、下流側基体を収容する下流側容器と、下流側基体と下流側容器との間の隙間部により形成された排気の流路とを含む。上流側容器は、下流側容器に接続されている。排気浄化装置は、上流側基体から流出する部分酸化された炭化水素を含む排気が下流側容器の内部において複数の方向に向かって分割され、分割された排気は、下流側基体と下流側容器との間の流路を流通した後に合流することにより混合され、混合された排気が下流側基体に流入する。

上記発明においては、上流側基体の排気が流入する端面の面積は、下流側基体の排気が流入する端面の面積よりも小さく形成されていることが好ましい。

上記発明においては、上流側容器は、下流側容器の周方向の表面に接続されており、上流側基体は、上流側基体から流出した排気が下流側基体の周方向の外面に向かうように配置され、上流側基体から流出した排気が下流側基体の周方向の外面において複数の方向に分割されることができる。

上記発明においては、上流側触媒は、貴金属の触媒粒子を有し、排気に含まれる炭化水素を部分酸化し、部分酸化した炭化水素を下流側触媒に供給することができる。
上記発明においては、上流側基体は、排気の通路に沿って延びる軸線を有し、下流側基体は、排気の通路に沿って延びる軸線を有し、上流側基体は、上流側基体から流出する排気が下流側基体の出口側の端部に向かうように、上流側基体の軸線が下流側基体の軸線に対して傾斜するように配置されていることが好ましい。

Claims (4)
- 機関排気通路内に排気に含まれるNOXと炭化水素とを反応させるための排気浄化触媒を備え、排気浄化触媒は、機関排気通路に直列に接続された上流側触媒と下流側触媒とを含み、上流側触媒は酸化能力を有し、下流側触媒は、排気流通表面上に貴金属の触媒粒子が担持されていると共に触媒粒子の周りには塩基性の排気流通表面部分が形成されており、
排気浄化触媒は、排気浄化触媒に流入する炭化水素の濃度を予め定められた範囲内の振幅および予め定められた範囲内の周期でもって振動させると排気中に含まれるNOXを還元する性質を有すると共に、炭化水素濃度の振動周期を前記予め定められた範囲よりも長くすると排気中に含まれるNOXの吸蔵量が増大する性質を有しており、
機関運転時に排気浄化触媒に流入する炭化水素の濃度を前記予め定められた範囲内の振幅および前記予め定められた範囲内の周期でもって振動させ、排気中に含まれるNOXを排気浄化触媒において還元する制御を行なうように形成されており、
上流側触媒は、触媒粒子が担持された上流側基体と、上流側基体を収容する上流側容器とを含み、
下流側触媒は、触媒粒子が担持された下流側基体と、下流側基体を収容する下流側容器と、下流側基体と下流側容器との間の隙間部により形成された排気の流路とを含み、
上流側容器は、下流側容器に接続されており、
上流側基体から流出する排気が下流側容器の内部において複数の方向に向かって分割され、下流側基体と下流側容器との間の流路を流通した後に合流し、合流した排気が下流側基体に流入することを特徴とする、内燃機関の排気浄化装置。 - 上流側基体の排気が流入する端面の面積は、下流側基体の排気が流入する端面の面積よりも小さく形成されている、請求項1に記載の内燃機関の排気浄化装置。
- 上流側容器は、下流側容器の周方向の表面に接続されており、
上流側基体は、上流側基体から流出した排気が下流側基体の周方向の外面に向かうように配置され、
