Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled preform having low loss, by subjecting the surface of quartz based glass rod to etching at a temperature lower than dew point and under F-containing compound gas atmosphere by heat source containing no H2 in order to sufficiently remove OH and forming porous glass on the treated surface of the rod. CONSTITUTION:A quartz based glass rod having low loss and low OH produced separately is passed into a chamber 1 made of quartz and clean and anhydrous air, etc., is fed thereto at -40 deg.C dew point after drying 3. Then the rod 2 is subjected to etching by flame 6 of plasma torch 5 passing through central opening 50 in the lower part of the chamber 1 and attached so as to clean and dehydrate the surface of the rod 2. Subsequently a glass fine particle layer is deposited on the outer surface of the rod 2 after etching and vitrified to provide the aimed optical fiber preform. Further more, the glass fine particle layer is obtained by feeding a glass raw material gas such as SiCl4 together with gas for plasma generation into the torch 5.
