Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a parent material for optical glass fiber of high quality readily by effecting dehydrative treatment after formation of a specific thin film on the outer surface of the glass rod. CONSTITUTION:A thin film of glass fine articles deposit 41 is formed in the thickness less than 50% of the rod diameter on the outer surface of the rod 1 for the core material by blowing a gas flame 3 for forming glass particles such as silicon tetrachloride from the annular-structure burner 2. Then, the composite is subjected to dehydrative treatment in an electric furnace 6 at 1,100 deg.C in an atmosphere of Cl2-containing gas to provide the starting materials having hydroxyl groups removed from the surface of the rod 1 and a thin layer of glass fine particles deposition from which hydroxyl groups are thoroughly removed. Then, glass fine particle soot 4 is deposited in a desired thickness on the outer surface of the thin film 21 to produce a clear glass parent material therefrom.
