Abstract

PURPOSE:To carry out the specular surface machining of a hard-to-grind member made of a hard and brittle material such as a silicon-nitride sintered body uniformly and highly accurately by continuously feeding abrasive grains to the machining surface of a workpiece from a grinding wheel member itself due to the pressing pressure and relative movement between the grinding wheel member and the workpiece and specularly machining the machining surface. CONSTITUTION:A workpiece 5 is fixedly attached to the bottom-face center of a supporting member 48, brought into contact with, and pressed against the top of a grinding wheel member 34 by controlling a loading piece 49, and rotated at a defined speed by means of a driving motor 46 via splines 45 and a gear assembly 47. On the other hand, the grinding wheel member 34 is fixed to the recessed part on top of a supporting base 35 and rotated by a driving motor 33. Thus, by carrying out relative rotation while pressing the grinding wheel member 34 against the workpiece 5, abrasive grains are separated from the grinding wheel member 34 and fed continuously and automatically to the machining face of the workpiece 5, to carry out the specular surface machining of this machining face with high accuracy.
