Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst which is easily separated, recovered and recycled after a reaction and allows the production of aldehyde with high selectivity under mild conditions, by supporting rhodium on stainless steel. CONSTITUTION:Stainless steel is allowed to react with rhodium carbonyl in a hydrocarbon solvent under elevated pressure of synthesis gas to obtain a rhodium supported stainless steel catalyst. In the presence of the catalyst, olefin is allowed to react with synthesis gas while keeping the partial pressure of carbon monoxide under <=5kg/cm<2> gauge pressure and that of hydrogen under >=10kg/cm<2> gauge pressure. The catalyst can easily be produced, the loss of the metal catalyst in the oxo reaction is considerably reduced and the reaction is performed in a low pressure range of the synthesis gas. Useful straight chain aldehyde can be produced with high selectivity by adding triphenylphosphine.
