Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the cleaning efficiency of an exhaust gas cleaner for an internal combustion engine by simplifying its stracture in such a way that an exhaust gas is introduced to an end of a vessel for a converter in which triple function catalyst is housed while said catalists are speedly heated by introducing a secondary air to the whole during its cool stage.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst converter 5 is constituted by housing a triple function catalyst 7, e.g. in honeycomb shape, in a vessel 6. Chamber 8 forming an end part of the vessel 6 is partitioned by a partition plate 9 and is provided with an inlet 8a and outlet 8b of an exhaust gas, while chamber 10 is communicated with a secondary air passage 12, and further a passage 13 branched from said passage 12 is communicated with an inlet 8a via an electromagnetic open/close valve 14. With the above constitution, during the cool stage in starting in low temperature, the valve 14 is opened to introduce the secondary air to the inlet 8a, whereby an oxygen reaction is done at a part 7a and 7b of the catalyst 7 and the removal of CO, HO as well as heating of the catalyst are facilitated.
