Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the fuel efficiency and suppress the generation of harmful emissions, by providing an exhaust valve whose cross-sectinal area is larger than the sum of those of two intake valves and by providing a squish protrusion on the top of a piston opposing to the two intake valves. CONSTITUTION:A first intake port 2 is opened in a position more distant than a second intake port 3, from the center of a combustion chamber 11, to cause an intense swirl. A throttle valve 9 is provided for the second intake port 3. The cross-sectional area of an exhaust valve 7 is larger than the sum of those of a first and a second intake valves. A squish protrusion 10A is provided on the top of a piston 10. In low-load operation, the throttle valve 9 is closed to supply the intake into the combustion chamber 11 through the first intake port 2. At that time, the intense swirl is caused by the squish protrusion 10A to stabilize the combusiton to improve the fuel efficiency and suppress the generation of harmful emissions.
