Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the titled copolymer leaving no deposition or scale on reactor walls, agitator or like areas and having a low degree of yellowing, by adding a solvent and a stabilizer to a polymerization mixture containing styrene and methyl methacrylate, copolymerizing the resulting mixture and subjecting the reaction mixture to a devolatilization treatment.
CONSTITUTION: To a polymerization mixture containing 10W90wt% styrene and 90W10wt% methyl methacrylate are added 3W25wt% solvent, b.p. 50W150°C, (e.g., benzene) and 0.05W0.4wt% stabilizer (e.g., 4-hydroxymethyl-2,6-di-t-butylphenol). The resulting mixture is fed to a plurality of polymerization zones consisting of a series of general-purpose reaction vessels and copolymerized at 120W180°C. The produced polymer is discharged while the copolymer concentration at the outlet of the final polymerization zone is maintained at 70W85wt%. Next, this reaction mixture is subjected to a devolatilization treatment at below 280°C and a diminished pressure of 5W500mmHg abs.
