Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an alcohol ingredient of an agricultural chemical directly by one step in a short time, in high yield, and extremely advantageously in industrial operations, treating a furancarbinol compound in a water solvent in the presence of a metal salt.
CONSTITUTION: A furan carbinol compound shown by the formula I (R1 is 1W6C alkyl, 1W6C alkenyl having no unsaturated bond at the end of linkage, alkynyl, etc.) is dissolved or suspended in an aqueous solution dissolving a metal salt, e.g., MgCl2, etc., heated to 20W200°C, and a reaction is carried out while pH being adjusted to 3W7 by buffer solutions of an acid and base. When the furancarbinol shown by the formula I is consumed, pH is adjusted to 5W10, and the reaction is carried out for several hours to give the desired compound shown by the formula II. The furancarbinol compound shown by the formula I is obtained by reacting methylfurfural shown by the formula III with an organometallic halogen compound shown by the formula R1MX (M is Mg, Zn, etc.; X is Cl, Br, etc.).
