Abstract

PURPOSE:A modified alcohol copolymer suitable as a paper coating agent, prepared by introducing sulfonic groups into the molecule. CONSTITUTION:Titled copolymer is obtained by copolymerizing a vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate with a monomer represented by formula I, wherein R<1> is H or a lower alkyl, R<2> is an alkyl, R<3>, R<4> and R<5> are each H or an alkyl, and M is H or an alkali metal, such as 2-acryl-amido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (alkali metal salt) of formula II, in the presence of an alkali by use of a radical polymerization initiator; and then saponifying the copolymer produced with an alkali or acid catalyst at about 10-50 deg.C.
