Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity methyl chloride effectively and in high yield, by the chlorination of dimethyl ether with excessive hydrogen chloride, and the reaction of the unreacted hydrogen chloride remaining in the reaction product with methanol.
CONSTITUTION: Dimethyl ether is reacted with excessive hydrogen chloride preferably at a molar ratio of 4.0W4.8 based on the dimethyl ether, in the presence of a metallic compound catalyst at 150W350°C, and the unreacted hydrogen chloride remaining in the reaction product is then reacted with methanol, to give high-purity methyl chloride effectively, economically and in high yield, under industrially advantageous conditions. This method may increase the respective utilization rates of dimethyl ether and hydrogen chloride to 100% and 90% or higher, which are very desirable values.
