Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the content of moisture and OH radicals in a glass material thereby to make it possible to reduce the loss of optical fibers by dehydrating the rod-shaped singered porous glass with the vapor in an acid chloride of sulfur. CONSTITUTION:The material gases for producing cores and claddings are injected together with oxyhydrogen flame from burners 4 and 5 into the cylindrical sealed container 1 which is equipped with exhaust gas treating device 14. The fine glass particles, which are produced by the hydrolysis in the flame, are caught by the lower end portion of a support rod 2, which is connected to a rotary lifter 3, so that the intered porous glass 6 is grown in the axial direction. Then, valves 12a and 12b are opened so that O2 gases are blown into the liquid phase of acid chloride of sulfur in a reservoir 9 such as SOCl2 and so that the vapor of the same is blown from a supply pipe 13 into the reservoir 1. The sintered glass having its temperature adjusted by a heater 7 is dehydrated and then is moved so that it is heated and turned transparent by means of a heater 8.
