Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain optical fibers with a very low OH content and a small optical loss easily at low cost, by using glass soot produced from combustion of an oxidizing gas while making a silicon compound flow from a crucible nozzle. CONSTITUTION:The liquid 2 containing a silicon compound, e.g. tetraethoxysilane, in the crucible 1 is made to flow from the nozzle 3. An oxidizing gas, e.g. oxygen, is fed to the pipe 4 and made to flow along the liquid 2. The gas stream is ignited to produce the flame 6 containing glass soot. The flame 6 is then blown on the target 8 to deposit the glass soot 7 in the form of a rod. The rod is molten by the heat source 11 to give the objective optical fibers.
