Description
まず、実施の形態1に係る液晶表示装置1について、図1を用いて説明する。図1は、実施の形態1に係る液晶表示装置1の概略構成を示す図である。
次に、実施の形態2に係る液晶表示装置1Aについて、図6を用いて説明する。図6は、実施の形態2に係る液晶表示装置1Aの部分拡大断面図である。
次に、実施の形態2の変形例について、図12A、図12B、図13及び図14を用いて説明する。図12Aは、実施の形態2の変形例に係る液晶表示装置の第1表示パネル100Aの第1TFT基板11の画素構成を示す平面図である。図12Bは、実施の形態2の変形例に係る液晶表示装置の第2表示パネル200Aの第2TFT基板21の画素構成を示す平面図である。図13は、図12A及び図12BのXIII−XIII線における同液晶表示装置の断面図である。図14は、図12A及び図12BのXIV−XIV線における同液晶表示装置の断面図である。
以下、実施例によって本開示をさらに具体的に説明するが、本開示はこれらの実施例によって限定されるものではない。本実施例では、液晶表示装置における位相差板の配置を変更して、サンプル1〜6を作製した。
カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルの対向基板(CF基板)側に位相差板付き偏光板(位相差板の屈折率特性:nx>nz>ny、位相差板の遅相軸と偏光板の吸収軸とのなす角度:90°)を、位相差板が偏光板よりも第1液晶セル側に位置するように貼り合わせた。ここで、第1液晶セルの液晶層として正の誘電異方性を有する液晶を採用し、偏光板の吸収軸と、第1液晶セルに含まれる液晶層(電界無印加状態でホモジニアス配列に配向させた液晶分子)の電界無印加時の長軸方向とが直交するように貼り合わせた。そして、この第1液晶セルのTFT基板側に、偏光板(位相差板なし)を、その吸収軸が、対向基板側の偏光板の吸収軸と直交するように貼り合わせた。このようにして第1表示パネルを得た。
第1表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に位相差板が積層されていない偏光板を貼り合わせ、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル2に係る液晶表示装置では、カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板のみが位相差板付き偏光板として構成されている。
第1表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に位相差板が積層されていない偏光板を貼り合わせたこと、及び、第2表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル3に係る液晶表示装置では、白黒画像表示用の第2液晶セルの対向基板側の偏光板のみが位相差板付き偏光板として構成されている。
第1表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に位相差板が積層されていない偏光板を貼り合わせたこと、及び、第2表示パネルの作製に際し、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル4に係る液晶表示装置では、白黒画像表示用の第2液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板のみが位相差板付き偏光板として構成されている。
第1表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に位相差板が積層されていない偏光板を貼り合わせ、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと、及び、第2表示パネルの作製に際し、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル5に係る液晶表示装置では、カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成され、かつ、白黒画像表示用の液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成されている。
第2表示パネルの作製に際し、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル6に係る液晶表示装置では、カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルの対向基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成され、かつ、白黒画像表示用の第2液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成されている。
第1表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に位相差板が積層されていない偏光板を貼り合わせ、TFT基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと、及び、第2表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル7に係る液晶表示装置では、カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルのTFT基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成され、かつ、白黒画像表示用の液晶セルの対向基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成されている。
第2表示パネルの作製に際し、対向基板側に上記位相差板付き偏光板を貼り合わせたこと以外はサンプル1と同様にして、液晶表示装置を得た。すなわち、サンプル8に係る液晶表示装置では、カラー画像表示用の第1液晶セルの対向基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成され、かつ、白黒画像表示用の第2液晶セルの対向基板側の偏光板が位相差板付偏光板として構成されている。
サンプル1〜8に係る液晶表示装置について、ハローの発生、正面方向における白輝度、及び、正面方向におけるコントラストを評価した。
以上、本開示に係る液晶表示装置について、実施の形態1、2に基づいて説明したが、本開示は、上記実施の形態1、2に限定されるものではない。

- 第1液晶セルと、
前記第1液晶セルよりも観察者から遠い位置に配置される第2液晶セルと、
各々が、偏光板及び位相差板が積層された光学シートであって、互いに同一部品である第1光学シート及び第2光学シートとを備え、
前記第1液晶セル及び前記第2液晶セルの各々は、観察者側の面である前面と、前記前面に背向する背面とを有し、
前記第1光学シートは前記第1液晶セルの背面側に配置され、かつ、前記第2光学シートは前記第2液晶セルの前面側に配置されている、
液晶表示装置。 - 前記光学シートは、さらに、前記偏光板及び前記位相差板に積層された光拡散層を有する、
請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記光学シートにおいて、前記偏光板の吸収軸と前記位相差板の遅相軸とが略直交している、
請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 各々が、偏光板を有する別の光学シートであって、互いに同一部品である第3光学シート及び第4光学シートとをさらに備え、
前記第3光学シートは前記第1液晶セルの前面側に配置され、かつ、前記第4光学シートは前記第2液晶セルの背面側に配置されている、
請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1液晶セルは、互いに対向する画素電極及び共通電極を含む第1TFT基板と、前記第1TFT基板に対向し、カラーフィルタ及び当該カラーフィルタを取り囲むブラックマトリックスを含む第1対向基板と、前記第1TFT基板と前記第1対向基板との間に配置された第1液晶層と、を有し、
前記第2液晶セルは、互いに対向する画素電極及び共通電極を含む第2TFT基板と、前記第2TFT基板に対向し、ブラックマトリックスを含む第2対向基板と、前記第2TFT基板と前記第2対向基板との間に配置された第2液晶層と、を有する、
請求項1〜4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1液晶セルの前記第1対向基板は、前記第1TFT基板よりも前記第1液晶セルの前面寄りに配置され、
前記第2液晶セルの前記第2対向基板は、前記第2TFT基板よりも前記第2液晶セルの背面寄りに配置されている、
請求項5に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1液晶セルと前記第1光学シートとを含む第1表示パネルは、カラー画像を表示し、
前記第2液晶セルと前記第2光学シートとを含む第2表示パネルは、モノクロ画像を表示する、
請求項5または6に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1液晶層は、正の誘電異方性を有するポジ型液晶を含み、
前記第2液晶層は、負の誘電異方性を有するネガ型液晶を含む、
請求項5〜7のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記光学シートにおいて、前記偏光板の吸収軸と前記位相差板の遅相軸とが略直交していて、
前記第1TFT基板の前記画素電極には、前記第1光学シートの前記偏光板の吸収軸よりも前記第1光学シートの前記位相差板の遅相軸となす角度が小さい方向に沿って延びる複数のスリットが形成され、
前記第2TFT基板の前記画素電極には、前記第2光学シートの前記偏光板の吸収軸よりも前記第2光学シートの前記位相差板の遅相軸となす角度が大きい方向に沿って延びる複数のスリットが形成されている、
請求項8に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 第1液晶セルと、
前記第1液晶セルよりも観察者から遠い位置に配置される第2液晶セルと、

前記第1液晶セル及び前記第2液晶セルの各々は、観察者側の面である前面と、前記前面に背向する背面とを有し、
前記第1液晶セルは、互いに対向する画素電極及び共通電極を含む第1TFT基板と、前記第1TFT基板に対向し、カラーフィルタ及び当該カラーフィルタを取り囲むブラックマトリックスを含む第1対向基板と、前記第1TFT基板と前記第1対向基板との間に配置された第1液晶層と、を有し、
前記第2液晶セルは、互いに対向する画素電極及び共通電極を含む第2TFT基板と、前記第2TFT基板に対向し、ブラックマトリックスを含む第2対向基板と、前記第2TFT基板と前記第2対向基板との間に配置された第2液晶層と、を有し、
前記第1液晶層は、正の誘電異方性を有するポジ型液晶を含み、
前記第2液晶層は、負の誘電異方性を有するネガ型液晶を含む、
液晶表示装置。 - 各々が偏光板及び位相差板が積層された光学シートである第1光学シート及び第2光学シートをさらに備え、
前記光学シートにおいて、前記偏光板の吸収軸と前記位相差板の遅相軸とが略直交していて、
前記第1TFT基板の前記画素電極には、前記第1光学シートの前記偏光板の吸収軸よりも前記第1光学シートの前記位相差板の遅相軸となす角度が小さい方向に沿って延びる複数のスリットが形成され、
前記第2TFT基板の前記画素電極には、前記第2光学シートの前記偏光板の吸収軸よりも前記第2光学シートの前記位相差板の遅相軸となす角度が大きい方向に沿って延びる複数のスリットが形成されている、
