Abstract
Iron scrap, for an electric arc steel making process, is preheated by (a) burning combustible substances contained in high temp. exhaust gases generated in an electric arc furnace to render the gas non-explosive; (b) using the gases to preheat scrap in a charging bucket; (c) charging the preheated scrap into the arc furnace; (d) directing any malodorous gases generated by evaporation of material adhering to the scrap in the furnace, which gases are emitted directly from the furnace and the charging bucket, into a deodorising appts. in which the malodorous components are pyrolysed or burnt; (e) directing the deodorised gases into a dust removing appts; and (f) discharging the resulting gases into the atmos. The process is economical since it employs hot gases, which have previously been discharged into the atmos., for preheating the scrap and for deodorising malodorous gases.
