1487737 Paint-remover compositions NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 1 Nov 1974 [5 Nov 1973 19 July 1974 (2)] 51282/73 32096/74 and 32097/74 Heading C5D A paint-remover composition for aerosol-type paints, e.g. to remove graffiti, has the form of a gel and comprises (i) an organic solvent containing one or more compounds having an ester group and one or more compounds having both an ether group and an alcohol group, (ii) a gelling agent having both water and organic solvent solubility, and (iii) a surface active agent which leads to the formation of an oil-inwater emulsion when said composition is dispersed in water. In the organic solvent (i), the esters may be those of aliphatic carboxylic acids with alkanols or alkoxyalkanols, e.g. ethyl acetate, amyl acetate, 2-ethoxyethyl acetate, and the ether-alcohols include, e.g. 2-ethoxyethanol and 2-butoxyethanol; other optional solvents include ketones, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone, and chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. dichloromethane. The gelling agent (ii) is preferably a cellulose derivative e.g. hydroxypropylcellulose, and the surface active agent (iii) may be cationic or non-ionic, e.g. a nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate or a non-ionic fluorinated hydrocarbon group surface active agent, e.g. of the formula where R is an aliphatic perfluorocarbon group, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or alkenyl and x is an integer.
