Abstract
999,155. Electrostatic precipitators. G. A. MESSEN-JASCHIN. Oct. 27, 1961 [Oct. 28, 1960], No. 38633/61. Heading B2J. An electrostatic precipitator comprises an earthed tubular electrode which is symmetrical about its axis in any transverse section, e.g. of circular cylindrical or conical form, and two ionizing electrodes supported coaxially within the tubular electrode and spaced apart by a distance 2l equal to the diameter 2s of the tubular electrode at a position mid-way between the ionizing electrodes. Fig. 3 shows pointed ionizing electrodes 4, each supplied with H.T. from a common source by conductors u i , within a circular cylindrical tube 3 providing a combined ionizing and precipitation zone L. In alternative arrangements the ionizing electrodes may be wire rings 20, Fig. 10, carried on a hollow insulating rod 19 housing the H.T. leads, or may be formed as carriers 22, Fig. 12, for a radioactive source 23 providing enhanced ionization. Figs. 4 and 5 show a two stage precipitator wherein pointed ionizing electrodes 6 are disposed within a cylindrical tube 5 to provide an ionization chamber, and the downstream electrode 6 is extended at 6a into a separate earthed collecting tube 7 where it cooperates with a charged counter-electrode 9 supplied by a conductor u a . The electrode 6, 6a is supported by struts 8 radiating through apertures in the collecting tube 7 and anchored to the casing (not shown). In a modified arrangement the downstream electrode is extended for the full length of the collecting tube and the counter-electrode 9 is dispensed with. In further arrangements, a series of spaced pairs of charged electrodes 4 or 20 may be arranged in a common earthed tube to provide a number of successive combined ionizing and precipitation zones.
