Abstract

A crack-resistant stainless steel comprises .Cr.14.0-28.0%. .Ni.6.5-26.0%.(Co up to 5% may ...replace part of the Ni) .Mn.7.5-15.0%. .Mo.0.5- 3.75%. .C.up to 0.08%. .Si.up to 2.0%. and is characterized in that it meets at least one of the following conditions expressed in weight per cent:- <TABS:0989570/C6-C7/1> the balance, apart from impurities, being iron. There may also be present .W.substituted for all or part of the Mo .V.up to 1.0% .Nb.up to 1.5% .S.up to 0.03% .P.up to 0.03% .Al.up to 0.3% .and Cu.up to 0.25% Heat treatments described include ageing at 1350-1500 DEG F. and solution treatment at 1700 DEG F. or 2000 DEG F. followed by water quenching.
