Abstract

The Mooney viscosity of a compounded ethylene-propylene copolymer is reduced by a process which comprises masticating the copolymer with 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of an organic peroxide at a temperature of 250 DEG to 400 DEG F. and thereafter compounding the polymer with conventional additives such as carbon black and further peroxide. Carbon black may also be present in the first mastication stage. By this process the compounded Mooney is reduced from 100-180 to 70-100. Exemplified peroxides are dicumyl peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide.
