Abstract
973,120. Fuel injection systems. GESELLSCHAFT FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. April 25, 1962 [April 25, 1961], No. 15705/62. Headings F1A and FIB. In an engine in which the main portion of the fuel is injected by a pump into the transfer passage connecting an auxiliary combustion chamber to the main combustion chamber, the pressure conditions in the transfer passage during injection and the flow resistences in the fuel pipe between the pump and transfer passage are such that the pump operates without imposing any substantial pressure on the fuel. The pump has a main plunger 1 which initiates the main injection through passage 12 when it enters the part of cylinder 14 above a recess 15, and an auxiliary plunger 2 which co-operates with a spring-loaded plunger 5 to produce a preliminary injection through passage 6 at a constant pressure determined by the loading of plunger 5. The passage 6 may join the main injection passage 7, which opens into the transfer passage through a valveless nozzle, or the passage 6 may lead to a separate injection nozzle in the transfer passage or auxiliary combustion chamber. In the initial movement of plunger 1, plunger 2 is raised to compress the fuel in space S and lift plunger 5 to open passage 6 for the preliminary injection, the main injection beginning when plunger 1 has traversed recess 15. The passage 12 has a lightly loaded non-return valve therein.
