Abstract

1,080,359. Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection pumps. J. L. GRATZMULLER. Sept.25, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963; Aug. 27, 1964], No. 39099/64. Headings F1A and F1B. In a fuel injection pump the quantity of fuel delivered is controlled by a calibrated constriction in the suction pipe to an injection cylinder or cylinders or the cylinder of a piston hydraulically actuating an injection piston. The piston or pistons drawing liquid through the calibrated constriction have a reduced diameter portion containing a liquid, e. g. fuel, which forms an annular liquid seal to prevent the entry of air into the cylinder or cylinders. In the embodiment illustrated, fuel drawn through the calibrated constriction 28 from a reservoir 18 is delivered to an injector 13 until a spill passage 14, 52 is opened by a cam actuated valve 40. The reduced diameter piston portion 46 communicates with the reservoir 18. The spill passage 14, 52 may be opened for a first portion of the delivery stroke of the piston 4. To stop fuel delivery the valve 40 may be held open by means of a manual lever 40 and to provide excess fuel for starting a valve in the spill passage 52 is closed. The spill may be effected through the suction conduit by opening the suction valve (35), Fig. 3 (not shown), during the pump delivery stroke. A pair of calibrated constrictions (28 and 70), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be provided in the suction conduit. One of the constrictions (28) may be closed by a needle valve (66), the second constriction (70) then acting as a slow running jet. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), an injection piston (82) is actuated hydraulically by a piston (74) via an actuator piston (176). The actuator piston (176) has a stroke dependent upon the effective displacement of the piston (74), which is controlled by the calibrated constriction (28) and the piston head (58). In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a pair of pistons (74', 82'), operating in connected cylinders (80', 103) draw fuel through the calibrated constriction (28), the smaller piston (82') delivers fuel through a delivery valve (20) and the pistons together spill fuel to the suction. The pistons are actuated by cams (118 and 124) on a cam-shaft (132). In a still further embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), a small piston (82") is movable within a larger piston (74") by means of a tappet (128') actuated by a cam, eccentric or cam operated rocker arm (148). The small piston (82") delivers fuel through a delivery valve (20) and the pistons move together to spill fuel, drawn into the common chamber (136) during the suction strokes, through the calibrated constriction (28').
