[Also in Groups XVII and XXXV] A method of withdrawing yarn from a yarn pack having transversely extending loops of yarn on a parting strip wound into a roll, comprises withdrawing the yarn in the longitudinal direction of the strip after the loop of the yarn to be next withdrawn has been brought by the motion of the yarn pack or roll to a spatially fixed point and has been exposed or released from the parting strip. In Fig. 5 the parting strip 9, separating the layer of loops 8, is withdrawn from the roll 10 by a guide roller 48 and a take-up reel 14, the reel 14 being controlled to draw the strip 9 off the roll 10 according to the rate of consumption of the yarn. The yarn is continually drawn off at the same level by resting the roll 10 on a table 49. To prevent balling or tangling and to cause the amplitude of the loops to become uniformly narrower, light braking elements 55 may press on the loops as shown. Alternatively, Fig. 6, a run-off table 49 vibrating in the direction 60 may be used. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the released loops of yarn are fed on to a perforated run-off table from which air is extracted by a fan. In Fig. 1 the loops 8 are drawn off in the direction of the arrow and the parting strip is wound on to a take-up reel 14. To ensure that the loops 8 are always drawn off in the same plane a cranked arm 38 carries a roller 12 resting on the package 10. The other arm of the cranked arm carries a stop 36 disposed between two electrical contacts 35 in a circuit controlling the switching on, and direction of rotation of, a motor 34. The motor 34 drives screw means raising and lowering the axis of the roll 10 in a manner maintaining a constant position for the plane of draw-off of the loops 8.
