Abstract

925,515. Rotary engines and pumps. J. F. SLAUGHTER. June 4, 1959, No. 19215/59. Class 110 (2). A rotary I.C. engine, Fig. 1, comprises a hemispherical stator 1 having a driving plate 2, 2a, journalled therein by bearings 5 and a thrust ring 6, the plate being recessed to receive one end of an oscillating spherical vane 3 which is pivotably secured thereto. The vane is provided with an arcuate recess 3b engaging a bearing block 4a which is free to rotate on a pin 4 mounted in the stator 1. The stator 1 is provided with a sparking-plug S and inlet and outlet valves and ports which are adapted to register with ports formed in the plate, see Fig. 2 (not shown). The fixed pin 4 may be replaced by a floating or revolving pin, see Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). The unit may comprise a pump, Fig. 10, wherein the vane-supporting pin 11 is eccentrically mounted in cylindrical supports 12, 13 forming part of the spherical wall of the stator. The supports 12, 13 may be relatively rotated in order to vary the capacity of the pump by means of a worm-wheel 51, gears 58, 59 and a frame 52 carrying gears 54, 55, 56-see also Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown) for a modified form of gear control. The device may function as an I.C. engine provided with a sparking- plug, atomizer or injection ignition means, as a pump, meter, power transmission unit or as a motor operated by compressed air or steam.
