Abstract
A method of simultaneously cleaning and disinfecting or sterilizing surfaces contaminated with Gram negative organisms, comprises applying to such surfaces an aqueous solution having bactericidal activity against Gram negative organisms and containing as an active bactericidal agent an alkyl aryl sulphonate and/or an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid preferably containing at least 0,01% by weight of the sulphonate component and having a pH between about 1,5 and about 3,5. The sulphonate component preferably is of the general formula R-Ar-SO3M where R is an alkyl group having from 4-16 carbon atoms, Ar is a phenyl or naphthyl radical and M is an alkali metal, the ammonium radical or hydrogen. Specified sulphonates are sodium decyl benzene sulphonate, sodium lauryl benzene sulphonate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and isobutyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate. The pH is obtained by including in the composition appropriate quantities, e.g. 0,01 to 0,3% by weight of materials such as acids and acid salts, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric, citric, gluconic, and glycolic acids and preferably orthophosphoric acid, sodium bisulphate, monosodium phosphate, and monoammonium phosphate. The solution may be buffered to maintain the prescribed pH under working conditions. The compositions may be in dry form and contain in addition to the sulphonate acid-forming materials in an amount sufficient to provide a pH of between about 1,5 and about 3,5 when the material is added to water and inert material. The composition may also be in the form of a liquid concentrate containing between about 1 and about 4% alkyl aryl sulphonate and/or alkyl aryl sulphonic acid, between about 8 and about 34% acidic material, and the balance inert ingredients which are generally water, but may also comprise non-ionic synthetic detergents for increasing the solubility of the active ingredients in hard water, corrosion inhibitors such as monoethanolamine, diethylthiourea, or dibutylthiourea and innocuous salts such as sodium sulphate. U.S.A. Specifications 2,338,688, 2,338,689 and 2,424,049 are referred to.ALSO:A method of simultaneously cleaning and disinfecting or sterilizing surfaces contaminated with Gram negative organisms, comprises applying to such surfaces an aqueous solution having bactericidal activity against Gram negative organisms and containing as the active bactericidal agent an alkyl aryl sulphonate and/or an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid preferably containing at least 0.01% by weight of the sulphonate component and having a pH between about 1.5 and about 3.5.
