Abstract
896,814. Mono-metal salts of cyanuric acid monohalides. CIBA Ltd. Feb. 17, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5685/60. Class 1(2) [Also in Groups IV(a), IV(c) and VIII] A water-soluble mono-metal salt of a 6- halogen - 2:4 - dihydroxy - 1:3:5 - triazine (cyanuric acid monohalide) is prepared by reacting a cyanuric halide, e.g. chloride or bromide, with a water-soluble metal salt of an acid weaker than formic acid, or a hydroxide or an oxide of a metal to form a dimetal salt of cyanuric acid monohalide and neutralizing the dimetal salt with an acid, e.g. HCI. Alternatively, the cyanuric halide and the metal compound are reacted in the correct molecular ratio to form the mono-metal salt directly. Alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides or: carbonates may be used, e.g. LiOH, NaOH, or KOH, and the first stage of the two-stage process may be carried out in two stages, by reacting first with weak alkali, e.g. NaHCO 3 , and secondly with strong alkali, e.g. NaOH. The reaction may be effected in aqueous or aqueous-organic liquid (e.g. aqueous acetone) media. The mono-metal salt may be isolated as solid by filtering with, or without, addition of a salting- out agent, e.g. NaCl, or by evaporating, e.g. under reduced pressure at 40‹-80‹C, The mono-alkali metal salts may be reacted with water-soluble salts, e.g. chloride or sulphate, of nickel, cobalt, or copper, or alkaline earth metal, e.g. magnesium, calcium, or barium, to form the corresponding mono-metal salts. Polyhydroxylated fibrous materials, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose, regenerated cellulose, linen, or cotton, may be acylated by impregnation with aqueous or aqueous-organic liquid solutions of the mono-metal salts to improve swelling capacity, wet crease resistance, dyestuff affinity, and pest and rot resistance. The solutions may contain buffer agents, e.g. mono- or di-sodium phosphates or alkali metal borates, acid-binding agents, e.g. alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate, electrolytes, e.g. NaCl, or Na 2 SO 4 , or non-electrolytes, e.g. urea, or the impregnated material may be subsequently steamed, or subjected to dry heat, in the presence of these agents.
